Perfection 12 Nov 2009
Format:Audio CD
A live audience are listening to this project being recorded and played for the first time.Initially, their appreciation is restrained and polite - the music sumptuously melodic, beautifully orchestrated and sung, but new to their ears. As the song cycle unfolds to them, so it does to us - the CD listener... By track 4 (Sailor and Widow (via some fabulous Danny Elfman/Tim Burtonesque gothic strings), there's some mild whooping, by track 8 (Liberty - like a parachute-less skydive of complete abandon) there's a positive ovation. By the time the album finishes you are with that audience on your feet demanding more of this beautiful, haunting, compellingly original masterwork.

As said, no problem with the high-rate songs & the concert with a full symphony orchestra surely looked good on paper, but.. these songs & their interprets sounded much better first time around when in a simpler, more intimate environment. I really do love much of what Keren Ann has made so far and have always found there's more feeling & subtlety when she sings in french, most of all songs in colloration with Vincent Biolay. The first Lady & Bird oeuvre managed to be quite original sounding while reaching an irresistible level of emotion. There's definitely something magic missing here.

Live tracks, beautiful music 17 Aug 2010
By James Skemp - Published on Amazon.com

I have a difficult time seeing how one can review the actual music on an album, since tastes are so personal, so I'll focus on myself.

I'm a pretty huge fan of Keren Ann's work. I started with the absolutely beautiful Nolita, then the okay La Biographie De Luka Philipse, La Disparition, and then a big shopping spree of Not Going Anywhere, Keren Ann, and Lady & Bird.

The latter featured some extremely beautiful songs. But even though I liked it, based on what I'd now collected of Keren Ann's works, I had a difficult time with La Ballade of Lady & Bird, since it seemed many of the songs were already covered elsewhere, and only a few really jumped out at me. So I kept pushing it off.

Finally I picked it up the other day, since my mind kept coming back to it, and it's truly unfortunate that I didn't realize this was a live album (I though the last two bonus tracks at the end were the only live tracks), because it was definitely a wise purchase.

Keren Ann isn't the main vocalist on every track, but that's what gives it a Lady & Bird feel to it.

Thus far, extremely happy with my purchase.

Update:

One note: you may be thinking that live tracks means that the audience will feature in the tracks, in some way. Outside of one song where they start clapping early, we only hear the audience at the end of each song, the one place where they clapped early, and right before the last two tracks begin, which I assume is an encore.

After yet another listen, I also find that I neglected to mention how beautiful the orchestra is, which is unfortunate, since this is one of the major appeals of the album.

Lady & Bird live 23 Feb 2011
By M. T. A. - Published on Amazon.com

This album sees Lady & Bird at their live-best. It sounds great and very epic, but misses the childisch charm of the studio-album. Therefore I recommend that studio-album and the Keren Ann-cd's more.
"Lady?"
"Yes Bird?"
"Are we trying to be Sigúr Ros now?"
