Linux deployment continues to increase, and so does the demand for qualified and certified Linux system administrators. If you're seeking a job-based certification from the Linux Professional Institute (LPI), this updated guide will help you prepare for the technically challenging LPIC Level 1 Exams 101 and 102.

The third edition of this book is a meticulously researched reference to these exams, written by trainers who work closely with LPI. You'll find an overview of each exam, a summary of the core skills you need, review questions and exercises, as well as a study guide, a practice test, and hints to help you focus.

Major topics include:

  • Critical GNU and Unix commands
  • Linux installation and package management
  • Devices and filesystems
  • Text editing, processing, and printing
  • The X Window System
  • Networking and security
  • Mail transfer agents
  • Email, FTP, and web services

These exams are for junior to mid-level Linux administrators with about two years of practical system administration experience. You should be comfortable with Linux at the command line and capable of performing simple tasks, including system installation and troubleshooting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thorough reference! Easy to read and follow. 21 Mar 2012
By Jon Schipp "Keisterstash" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Clear, concise, with lots of examples. It is well organized; read cover-to-cover.

For both exams, book is split into two parts, one for each exam. Practice questions and a practice exam included in each part.

If you have a few years experience with Linux you can probably skim most of it and still benefit enough to pass the exam. I picked up a few things, here and there that I didn't know or had forgotten.

If you are new to Linux and want to get the LPIC-1, the nutshell book, in my opinion, isn't going to provide enough information to fully grasp all the areas in the exam. You could, however, pass the exam by studying this book with little or no prior knowledge of Linux.

I recommend practicing the examples for retention.

This book could also be used as a good starter for taking up the Linux command-line.

5.0 out of 5 stars LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell. Third Edition 26 Jan 2011
By RJ - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This was an excellent book, being that I am a novice to Linux, the format was kind of complex. As I continue to read the chapters, it became easier. I will say that this book will completely compare you for the certification test. Also, the book is a great tool for system administration to use for referencing and for anyone wanting to become a system administration.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not crazy about the organization 3 July 2012
By Christopher G. Loverich - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This item is probably best suited for someone with extensive familiarity with everything covered, perhaps to serve as a relatively quick review and to ensure that you're familiar with the necessary material. I went in with this understanding, despite being more of a beginner to linux, but thought it might serve as a reference / staging point for learning about essential parts of the OS. It did not meet my expectation in this regard, and I've found myself more satisfied with (the more extensive) Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux, A (3rd Edition). Supposedly all of his books are as good as this one, though I can't speak for the others personally.
