Firstly, this is a double album, they are both live recordings and very similar in content. One is at Ronnie Scott's and the other is at the MAC.
Ruby has been around now for nearly 30 years. She is of course well established and probably the best voice to ever have come out of Jamaica. She is better known for her live performances than for her chart success. She has had some moderate chart success here with her singles but never really got near a hit with her albums, which is perhaps somewhat surprising. Several of her singles are on this cd.
There's no doubt in my mind that the real driving force behind Ruby's music is gospel, so many of her songs stretch out well beyond the normal 3 to 4 minute range. They grow as they go, building into a crescendo, rather like a lot of the gospel choirs tend to do with their songs.
What a voice this woman has but live on stage she is an absolute show - stopper, as her regular touring with Jools Holland showcases. I've seen her several times with Jools and she is always the stand out performer. No wonder that she has now become a permanent addition to the band.
She so deserves a big chart album.
