Gotye is from Australia (via Belgium) and is a one-man indie success story over there. Apparently he acted as his own manager, plugger and record label while working in a library by day and then got a fantastic response upon release there . He has subsequently won a plethora of prestigious awards including both the Australian equivalent of the Mercury Music Award (the AMP) and a BRIT Award (the ARIA for Best Male Artist), in 2007.
First single `Hearts A Mess' soars and swells into an orchestral gem with an outstanding vocal performance. `Coming Back' exhibits the signature Gotye method of conjuring a kind of filmic atmosphere while weaving in his own tale of heartache. `Learnalilgivinanlovin' weaves brass samples into Gotye's Motown-esque vocal harmonies to super-catchy effect. `Puzzle With A Piece Missing' is all echoed snares, rim shots and reggae horns `The Only Thing I Know' is a melody of stadium-sized proportions. Whilst `Night Drive's evocative balmy Miami percussion links Gotye to all the other creatively minded 80's babies that are delving into their childhood memories of radio pop to reforge a sound for the 00s.
A superb album, it deserves to do very well.
