Book Description

14 Oct 2005
From Holy Island, the home of the most famous of all Celtic illuminated manuscripts, The Lindisfarne Gospels, comes this beautiful, meditative work of art in the ages-old creative Celtic tradition.
You will be amazed at the intricacy of Mary’s painstaking work, accomplished over a period of six years, and marvel at the various artistic threads and sources of inspiration. But, more importantly, you will be drawn into a deep stillness with God, a peace that becomes a Christ-centred life. You will be challenged by the profundity of the poetry and inspired by the way in which calligraphy and art combine to confront and challenge our perceptions and urge us into a deeper life with God.

More About the Author

Mary Fleeson (maiden name Prior) was born in 1969 and grew up in a small market town in Shropshire, she has lived on Holy Island since 1997.

She studied Foundation Art at Stafford College, specialising in textiles, and gained an honours degree in Three-Dimensional Design from the University of Central England in Birmingham in 1992.

About her work Mary thinks that her style originates from doodling in lessons at school, (not something she recommends as a way of succeeding in exams!) combined with opportunities during her education to experiment with many different types of media and techniques. Together with her Christian faith, living on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and being surrounded by it's natural beauty and visible history, is the greatest inspiration for Mary's work; a feeling of being part of a rich cycle of life which began in pre-history and encompasses extremes of peace and violence, poverty and prosperity. She also studies early manuscripts and ancient calligraphy from around the world to gain an insight into how calligraphy and illumination have enhanced works, both religious and secular, throughout the ages.

Music is also a wonderful inspiration for her art, particularly the work of David Fitzgerald, (co-founder of the band 'Iona') and Jeff Johnson, (an American Christian with a Celtic heart).

Poetry and prose also play their part, both the experiece of writing and reading it, C.S. Lewis, Stephen Lawhead and Stephen Baxter are favourites.

Product Description

From the Publisher

The Lindisfarne Scriptorium is based on a small Island off the coast of England roughly half-way between Newcastle and Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne was key to the Christian faith being spread in the 7th century A.D. and was the location of a Celtic and then later Benedictine monastic community.

We aim to offer an artform which draws the viewer into an experience of prayer, meditation and blessing.

Through merging old skills with new materials we combine the ancient skills of the scribes such as those who created the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Book of Kells with modern calligraphy, illumination and illustration. Inspiration is drawn from the rich Celtic Heritage and spirituality of Northumbria, our Christian faith and the beautiful environment on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.

We try and follow in the great Monastic Scriptoriums traditions by producing pieces of artwork that draw the viewer into a piece so that the Glory of God shines through as details become seen.

From the Author

Taken from first chapter.

Dear Reader,
You are invited to accompany me on a journey, to share a quiet walk, some thoughtful moments and a few challenges.
The aim of this book is simple. I hope that through the imagery and words that you are drawn closer to the God that inspired them.
This is not a book of answers. I only hope to share with you a little of what I have discovered since becoming a Christian and encourage you to ask questions of yourself, of others and of God. Ask God for the right questions to ask and be open to challenging your preconceived ideas.
Enjoy the artwork, it has all been created on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in Northumbria, inspired by God and the beautiful surroundings (some people say that Holy Island is a ‘thin place’, somewhere you feel that you can reach out and touch God); read about my thoughts on the Journey, I hope that you will find some things to make you think and some things to make you feel that you have a companion on your Journey; please try the suggested activities on your own or with a small group and when the time is right pray the prayers.

I hope this unique book will lead or refresh many in their pilgrimage into prayer and journey into Life.
Br. Damian SSF, Vicar, Holy Island of Lindisfarne.

Mary’s creativity shows in her vibrant organic images, her scribal work and her words. Travelling alongside her family, friends and community, she recognises that she has her own unique journey, as do we all. Her gifts are such that she is able to share it with us through her work, and help us all on our way. Thank you, Mary.
Dr Michelle Brown, Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts (including the Lindisfarne Gospels) at the British Library extracted from the foreward).
A beautiful book – one that invites the reader on an inner journey of discovery, adventure, awakening, reflection and faith. Creative and inspired, the book resonates with the author’s own deep faith and touches all the senses through its wonderfully crafted and created pages. The artwork is outstanding and the helpful poems, prayers, meditations, Bible quotations, design notes and suggested activities make for a fascinating treasury and companion for all who are exploring or seeking to deepen their faith.
Roy Searle, Leader of the Northumbria Community and Director of Renovare in Britain and Ireland.
The Lindisfarne Gospels are alive and well, and unfolding anew in the spirit of the 21st century, under the gifted hand of Mary Fleeson. In this beautiful book we are invited into a journey where timeless scribe, Celtic saint and contemporary Christian pilgrim join hand in hand to inspire and to guide us to deeper commitment and greater love.

What a wonderful book. I was introduced to Mary Fleesons work some years ago - so even years on his work never fails to amaze me. The prayers and meditations go through to the heart of Mary's art work. This is a book so full of thoughtful words and art - everytime I look at it get a better understanding of myself and God. Just great.
