Biography

“All great truths begin as blasphemies,” proclaimed the fiery playwright George Bernard Shaw. It’s a sentiment that can be applied exponentially to the works of rapper Sage Francis and his exhilarating new album Li(f)e. Francis has never been afraid to provoke. As a result he is a sometimes polarizing and increasingly important figure in modern music. Adored by many, reviled ... Read more in Amazon's Sage Francis Store

5.0 out of 5 stars A great discovery! 14 Jun 2010
Format:Audio CD
I am new to Sage Francis and to be brutally honest i didn't even know he existed before my recent birthday. My dad had said he had bought me a hip hop CD for my 27th birthday and i had no idea what it was. Well what a brilliant suprise. This album in my opinion is pure brilliance. I love the fact that is blends rock/country/indie music with hip hop in such a seamingless way. I never knew what to expect but from the opener 'Little Houdini' about the auto theft convict escapee Christopher Daniel Gray i was totally sucked in. When an album starts with strums on an acoustic you know your onto something a bit different. What is so good about this album is its not indie trying to be hip hop or hip hop tyring to be indie, its real music with a brilliant MC crafting his rhymes around the music. And i know its not hugely original nowadays but its great to hear another intelligent rapper not bleating on about guns and women and saying something meaningful. As i said before i am not aware of his other albums (however i think i will check them out) and this is my first listen to Mr Francis but what a totally enjoyable experience. Thanks Dad.

Top tracks - Little Houdini / Three Sheets To The Wind / Diamonds & Pearls / The Baby Stays /

Sage has been doing this for years. For my money he is one of the best spoken word performers on the scene today. Li(F)e takes his music in a different direction to most of his previous work using a band to create the backdrop for Sages effortless lyricism. Although for me not his greatest album - I still listen to his 2002 album 'Personal Journals' regularly - this is a welcome album from the big man. There are many good tracks, 'The Best of Times' is probably the most heart-warming a personal tale of the trials and tribulations of growing up and finding ones way in the world. While 'Little Houdini' is an emotional tale about a convict who escapes custody to be at his fathers deathbed. For those new to Sage Francis work this is a good album to ease you in gently. However for a heavier, more hip-hop orientated look at his music you might like to give 'The Human Death Dance' a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sage has found his true musical voice 28 Nov 2010
Format:Audio CD
It's been the best part of a decade since I first picked up Personal Journals and fell sway to Sage's way with a rhyme,so I consider myself a long term fan and write from that perspective. Despite his lyrical skills and flawless flow I've often thought that his solo albums are quite frustrating to listen to from beginning to end because they promise brilliance and genius with one track only to fall flat with hokiness or a misjudged experiment with live instruments(his take on Turn the Page on personal journals,or Jah didn't kill Johnny off of a healthy distrust, for example)and that his collaborative efforts with DJ Signify or as the Nonprophets really suited his style best, forcing him to play the role of mystical yet somehow straight talking MC for the duration.
I hesitated for too long buying this album... from beginning to end it delivers nothing but gold, as though Sage has found his true musical voice...little houdini, is classic story telling...Three sheets to the wind, rocks hard and from then on it's all the ups and downs of life until The best of times leaves you weeping at the close of the record. Recommended to all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Surprise 23 Nov 2010
By Soo
Format:Audio CD
After hearing best of times on the radio a few times, I was completely blown away. I had thought of just downloading the single, but I decided to go for it and buy the album. It is amazing. I cannot claim to be a massive Hip Hop fan, but I really love more quirky stuff, spoken word and poetry in music and it delivers. I would say it is accesible to a lot of people with varying music tastes and I have since purchased a lot of his other stuff which again is different, but excellent in its own way. There are a few mediocare tracks on there, but they are few and far between, Little Houdini is excellent. Buying the album really paid off!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and different 28 Jun 2010
Format:Audio CD
Having only previously heard "Best of Times" i bought this album purely on a whim. i was on the computer and just thought yeah ok. so i bought it and when it arrived i loaded it into the CD player and when i listened to it i was blown away. some of the tracks are mediocre, but honestly some are brilliant. Three Sheets to the Wind, and Little Houdini are just amazing with a huge backing that works with Sage Francis' voice rather than blotting it out as you might worry. all in all its well worth a listen

4.0 out of 5 stars All His Anger's Turned to Melancholy.... 13 Jun 2010
Format:Audio CD
OK, 4 Stars as a huge Sage fan (who's currently feeling *exactly* what he's rhyming about), but 3 and a half would probably be a bit more objective.

For those who get hung up on such things, though Hip Hops's in the ear of the hearer, this is defo his least Hip Hop album: there isn't even the epic, spitting extravaganzas that some of his less-Hip Hop albums had, to come and 'save the day'.

It's like he's finally just been fully ground down, and gotten older; like he doesn't have even a drop of anger or venom left in him anymore... though plenty of bitterness, still some of the nastiest rhymes out there, and a ton of melancholic poetry.

Think 'Human the Death Dance', but less quirky, with less beautiful/powerful music, and no 'Hoofprints in the Sand', or anything like it....

I say all this because I don't want to mislead anyone, though it's made the review seem more 'negative' than it actually is: fact is, I love the album - if you've just had your heart completely broken, or have just generally become irrevocably disappointed in the human condition (in a sad, rather than angry way), then you might too....
