I am very satisfied with my recently purchased LG DVD recorder. I have read all the other reviews and have not been troubled by problems that others describe. For example, it is true that, if you watch a programme as it is being recorded, you get unwanted sub titles. However, you can always switch to your television and watch it direct. Or, if you have an analogue set and are using the DVD recorder as a digibox, you can wait a few seconds and then press 'Home' and select the programme from the hard drive as it is recording (chase play), then watch it without subtitles a few seconds late.
I also found the user manual to be as good as most others - though maybe that is not saying much. The only serious problem I came across was the description of how to connect an HDMI cable. This was totally useless, and it was only by phoning the LG helpline that I found the answer. They were most helpful and suggested the following:
Select HDMI input by using the 'Input' button on your TV. (Mine is an LG, it might be different on other makes). Then on the DVD recorder press AV Input repeatedly until you get a picture. Job done. However, I have yet to see any significant improvement in picture or sound quality, so you might be better off to save your money by not buying an HDMI cable and connecting up with scart leads.
As a bonus, it seems to record programmes by responding to a signal from the transmitter, so when a programme I really wanted to record was rescheduled from 9pm to 8pm, it spotted the change and started recording an hour earlier than I set. This was quite unexpected, as it is not mentioned in any of the literature. The marketing people are missing a trick there
