4.0 out of 5 stars No complaints - at this price., 17 Dec 2007
By T. Legge (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Recently, two things happened; my TV broke, and I bought a MacBook. I didn't want to spend a lot on replacing my TV (it's only in the bedroom), and I also fancied a slightly larger monitor to complement the not so large display of the Macbook. After weighing up various options, I plumped for this offering from LG - and for the price (about £220) I am fairly pleased with it!

I am using the TV functionality for inputs via SCART (from Freeview box) and composite RCA from a DVD player, and as a monitor I am feeding it via DVI from the MacBook. It was all straightforward enough to set up, without having to resort to the (thin) manual. There's a CD of drivers included - I didn't need them - as a monitor it worked straight away with OSX Leopard and Windows Vista using BootCamp (though Vista switches off the "Aero" look when the monitor is connected - not something that bothers me).

As a TV, you are hardly spoiled for choice with set-up options, but the basics are covered, and you get a remote control. I don't use the built in speakers, but they didn't sound particularly nice as I reached for the remote control to turn them off - permanently. If you care about sound in any way, I'd recommend using external audio gear. There's noticeable backlight bleed at top and bottom of the picture - but as a bedroom TV the picture quality is perfectly adequate.

When used as a monitor (max 1650 x 1080 resolution), the colour will not strike you as being the most vibrant you have ever seen, and the max resolution is being pushed a bit at 22" for close up work - but it is certainly a welcome expanse of desktop for day-to-day use.

So, this is an easy to use, flexible, and good value solution for anybody needing both TV and monitor facilities on a budget. It is not a stunning performer in either department - but it is certainly good enough. I didn't audition one before buying, but having lived with it for a while now, I would definitely buy one again. Just don't buy it as your main living-room TV or as your primary monitor (particularly for design work etc), but that's probably stating the obvious!

(p.s. - the blue chevron power LED is annoyingly bright when watching TV - but LG thoughtfully provide full schematic diagrams in the box - for those who fancy adjusting that more elegantly than with a piece of black tape!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Average picture quality but very versatile., 14 Nov 2007
I was looking for a good sized monitor at sensible money that I could use as a TV and computer monitor. Well this is it.

The picture quality isn't exactly brilliant but is perfectly acceptable for a monitor at this price. The best thing about this monitor is the vast array of inputs! The only input it doesn't have is an HDMI, which seems a bit of an oversight so you will need to decide whether that is important to you. I have my pc and playstation plugged in at the moment and at some point I will connect my digiview box and turntable. (There's no digital tuner on this monitor). In addition to that I can plug my speaker system into the headphones socket for better sound reproduction. The onboard speakers are pretty poor, but then the same is true for my flat screen tv and that cost considerably more.

All in all I am extremely pleased with this item. It's actually better than I anticipated especially for the fact that I can easily plug in my turntable and play all those old vinyls.

I would have given it 5 stars but then nothing is perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars At £190 - An incredible deal!, 19 Sep 2008
By Stampy (London) - See all my reviews
I bought this screen for use at university, as my room is small, and space is limited, and I have to say it's fantastic. It offers connections for just about anything you could want and allows you to combine all your gadgets through one output (I personally have my PS3 and computer hooked up at the moment.)

The picture quality is brilliant, and the resolution ideal for everyday PC and DVD viewing. One slight problem is the lack of HDMI port, which for the PS3 would be nice to have as I am currently using the RCA inputs, which look a bit dodgy on an LCD. On the other hand, there is a DVI connection, and with the purchase of a HDMI to DVI cable (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ps3-Hdmi-Dvi-Cable/dp/B000NWQULS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1221838706&sr=1-1), that problem should be sorted.

As mentioned before, and also about the 19" version, the sound quality of the speakers is not very high. However, I have it connected through a separate system (as I would frankly do with any monitor), and it sounds great.

In conlusion, I feel that despite the niggles with the sound and lack of HDMI port, this product still deserves five stars. Why? Because it cost me £190. This is extreme value for money when you compare it to its closest competitors, and I have yet to see a better deal out there. You wont get top quality home cinema experience, but you also won't pay £1500. If like me you are on a budget, then look no further, you won't be dissappointed.
