At the time of buying this item I'd also considered some of the more expensive contenders too but decided on the LG due to it's price tag. Having now had the unit for around four months I feel I'm in a position to offer a fair, if somewhat detrimental review of it. Overall, it does what it says it does; plays Blu Ray discs; upscales standard DVD's and records to its in built HDD TV transmissions. All things considered I'm puzzled as to why LG couldn't have shipped it with an in built DVD recorder to allow the transfer of recorded TV programmes to standard DVD discs. My main reservations with this particular product are as follows;
On more than one occasion the clock has drifted by around 10 minutes within a day. Setting it to auto seemed to trigger this so have since set it manually.
Likewise with the clock, the series link feature is scarily unreliable. On three occasions so far it has reset itself. I could understand this if there'd been a power outage but I know there hasn't been.
On some occasions as I've been watching a DVD on it and the time of day has reached a point where a series link programme has been scheduled to begin, a 5 minute warning message has flashed up on screen after which the unit has then recorded said programme, this is fine and dandy, however, at other times in the same situation, no warning message has flashed up on screen and consequently no programme has been recorded, grrrrrrr, (but on checking, the listing is still live in the series link).
The remote control/on screen graphics aren't particularly intuitive. When a DVD has ended and you've pressed stop, more often than not you're presented with a screen with a preset wallpaper - not particularly obvious at that point how to return to the in built tuner and this has resulted on more than one occasion with me pressing the remote control buttons until something happens.
On the plus side, the reproduction of Blu Ray discs is stunning and the selectable picture type is a great help when connecting to a projector that wasn't designed for 1080. Likewise, having access to YouTube is a boon too.
Overall I'd suggest that if you're looking for a Blu Ray player that has a HDD unit in it too then do some serious comparisons between this and what ever else is available on the market. It won't be too long though before Blu Ray recorders become mainstream and therefore more affordable in the same way that their little brothers, the standard HDD DVD recorders have, in which case, hang on to your wallet for now.
