5.0 out of 5 stars Well executed product, 8 April 2009
By Neil Patterson - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have had this a few weeks now and I thought I would wait to write a review, just in case any anomaly's made themselves known. I have just burned a dual layer disc (Aone brand) for the first time and it seems to have done the job fine. I tried the disc in the burner itself and in a Samsung DVD recorder. It seems to play back well, though I haven't sat and watched the whole movie. I did jump chapters through to the second layer and there seemed to be no problems. I have burned cd's and single layer dvd's with it and watched movies and played cd's. Overall it seems to be a good unit. The discs I use are all basic discs (like Ridisc for instance) with no big name brands and they all work perfectly. The unit is fairly unique I think in that it is fine burning discs with no extra power supply needed. The usb cable takes care of everything. I guess there may be a way to max it out but I haven't found it yet. I use the burner with an Asus eeepc 1000 and they seem happy together. It's lightweight and just slightly bigger than I expected. All in all I feel that this is a good quality reliable burner that does what I need it to do and does it well. Good unit, good price and quick delivery = happy Amazon customer!!

5.0 out of 5 stars LG GP08LU10 with Lightscribe, 20 Jul 2009
By Claptonian (London UK) - See all my reviews
I bought the Lightscribe version of this elsewhere about 7-8 months ago to go with a new Netbook, and paid slightly more than at Amazon. It has not been used too often, but has successfully written several CDs and DVDs. I wanted the version being sold here, but it was not in stock at that time. It is very slim, light and does not need an external power supply unlike some others. It does however came with a power lead, one end of which plugs into a small socket at the rear of the drive and the other into an unused USB 2.0 socket. Personally, I haven't yet needed it, as the drive works perfectly without it on my Netbook, laptop and desktop. Both this and the normal USB 2.0 lead are both relatively short, about half a metre in length, and a USB 2.0 extension lead might be useful if you can get one.
If you need Lightscribe, opt for this if you can find it, but in my experience labelling via Lightscribe is slow, around 8 minutes for even the simplest text labels, and more than 30 minutes for complex ones. Added to the premium price of, and relative difficulty in finding, Lightscribe discs it can prove expensive and time consuming if used often.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good buy
A bit noisy and not the fastest unit in the market, but very manoeuverable. It does the job and it does it well (USB cable could be longer). Certainly worth the money.
