This is basically a brown box item and that is why it's cheap. Both XP and windows 7 detected it fine. The LG model I received is a GH24NS95, not as above. This is in need of a firmware update. The drive has a problem that should not be the case in 2012. I checked drive info with nero drive info tool and the buffer is only 768KB. That is ridiculously low when most DVD Rewriters now have at least 2MB. I have another LG DVD and bluray drive and both have 2M or more. One of them is about 4 years old.

So I searched on the LG website and the GH24NS95 is only shown on the U.S version not UK. [...]

When I looked in the section for download's, no firmware and only PDF manual files. So I called LG and was confirmed the GH24NS95 is in the UK. LG agreed about the website and passed on what I have found so hopefully there can be a firmware update to sort this and other issues out.

I am debating whether to send this back or just keep it for the sake of £14. I think this is only worth 3 stars for the reasons I have stated.

Here is some of the information from nero, about this drive.

For the meagre price of £13.47, this is excellent value. I chose LG because I have two LG drives in another computer and they have been totally reliable. I am replacing a Sony drive which no longer writes DVDs despite infrequent use.
Please remember, this is a 'bare' drive and you will need cables. The power input is the SATA type, so you can not use the standard four-prong type coming off the power supply. I bought a power adapter and SATA cable from AppTrad on Amazon for 96p delivered!

I bought it after seeing someone else's comment about this being good at reading old, scratched discs. I had one that wasn;t even seen in at least 5 computers that I tried it on. Well, plugged this unit in, put the disc in and instant result! I always had excellent results with LG units in the past also. So I can only recommend.

This was a standard fit internal DVD/CD combo writer/re-writer and was an easy installation. Windows 7 picked up the drivers straight away and it worked immediately.

The Black LG GH24NS90.AUAA50B 24x SATA Internal DVD Rewriter works really well and at high speeds. Plug and play, the way I like it and this device worked straight out of the box.
The unit arrived in time and was well packaged. It works well with the free burning software and DVDs I use. A great device, nothing to dislike about it, well done LG.

The product described above will not be the product you receive. I and others have received the LG GH24NS95, which is a poor product which doesn't work properly. The seller is titled as "base" not LG.

This is just a load of rubbish. The dvd drive will not read games I have placed in it and will only read CD's, and it doesn't even do that very well. So this should in fact be called sketchy CD drive.

My old computer that i used to use 5 years ago had a DVD rewriter, but i stopped using that computer when i had a new computer custom made, at the time i had it built, i did not really use a DVD rewriter so i opted not to have one in my new PC, but after only 6-8 months i found i wanted to burn CD's and DVD's a lot more, so i had to get my old computer out of the cupboard and rig my old tower up to my new monitor with a maze of wires and electrical cables, then put it all away again once i had finished, then get it all out again next time, as i could not just take the DVD drive out of my old computer and put it into my new one as it was not compatible with my new computer.

I would have bought one of these a lot sooner (5 years ago) but i did not because i though it would be a nightmare to install and then to enable it all and get it 100% fully working, i just thought i could do without all that hassle.

Well now i wish i just went ahead and bought one of these 5 years ago, it is truly brilliant, it was a breeze to fit and install, i just pushed it in to the slot, then pushed the two pins in that hold it in place and that was it, job done, it is also pretty much plug and play ( on windows Vista anyway ) as i did not have to install anything or muck about with drivers, my computer recognized it instantly and said it was ready to use, within 1-2 minutes after getting it out of the box i was burning CD's, its that easy.

It is also pretty fast, burning 18 tracks, that's 79m 57s of music to CD in only 2m 35s.

It is fairly quite for what it is, obviously there is going to be noise when burning disks as the disks can spin at thousands of revolutions a minute.
