LG GE20LU10 Super Multi - DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM drive - Hi-Speed USB
I got the LG GE20 writer on the basis of price and the bundled S/ware which includes Nero 7 and the Cyberlink DVD bundle. For a touch over £40 this is good value compared to all alternative products I found available. I have not yet tried the LightScribe facility which I did not required, but have no hesitation in recommending this package. Ordered Friday P.M., received midday Tues 3March.
This all works fine with my Toshiba laptop and with Vista. (Also the dvd shrink program which I use for copying on occasions.) The Toshiba software provided with the laptop for use with dvd's and for copying I found limited and is, I think, based around some Ulead s/ware and pretty basic, whereas with this product you are getting Cyberlink's `PowerDVD 7' and `PowerProducer 3' which are far superior and some improvement on the earlier XP versions I used but which I found would no longer work with Vista. This meant that I was looking at having to upgrade the Cyberlink s/ware and also Nero 6 which, again, will ALSO no longer work with Vista as Nero provide no support now for this on their website.
Never cared much for all the whistles and bells of Nero and (although the best copying s/ware) I baulked at paying the asking price of Nero 9 (nearly as much as the cost of this product and bundle!!) which I very much doubt has anything much to offer over the included Nero 7.
As expected, as an external dvd writer it is somewhat noisy during the burning stage, (what one is not?) but not a problem. It is fairly bulky and not as attractive as the smaller slim line models but for functionality this is all you really want, fast and nicely bundled. Some may like to know that apart from the bundled Windows s/ware the Writer will also work fine with a Mac.
Looks good and does the job perfectly.Very good product and great value for money - the only downside is its Nero software - which is very poor and will give you headache if you do lots of data discs but if you will use different software LG is a great burner.
Some information for Mac users, none of the software supplied on the installation disc is Mac OSX compatible, other than a pdf file. To use Lightscribe, you'll need to download the installation software from their website, not the LG one, at www.lightscribe.com, as well as the most basic lightscribe design/burn software. As far as SecurDisc is concerned, forget it. That software's only for Windows and frustratingly enough, Nero, who do it for their Windows burning software, (even though they produce burning software for Macs (Toast, which is hideously expensive)), don't do SecurDisc for Toast and Macs.
I had bought the rewriter just as a rewriter, but had hoped those extras would have justified the need for it, as it was something I wasn't desperate for, but to make use of the SecurDisc option as well as Lightscribe, would have been great.
