I'm reviewing this LG Blu-Ray player because I bought it specifically for the Smart functions - free access to Amazon Prime Streaming being the main driver for acting now - and the existing reviews don't talk about them in enough detail for my taste. Oh yes, I needed a new DVD player. But my old Panasonic TV is neither HD nor 3D so it's not hard to match its capabilities for playing old DVDs. It does have HDMI connections though, so it's not so old as all that. My network is either a power supply network running at 85Mb fed by all you can eat BT Infinity, or the wireless network provided by the BT box. Either should have enough grunt, I reckoned.

Amazon Prime Streaming (aka LoveFilm) works fine though the app in the box is clunky and slow when compared with iPlayer. iPlayer works really well and the app is slick. There's no native LG app for 4OD or Demand 5 but 4OD is available through Prime Streaming along with a bunch of other TV channels. Whichever app I'm streaming through, the network has enough grunt to deliver continuous play without pauses or stuttering though the player has seized up twice now while streaming Amazon films.

I have tried connecting the player to the network via Wi-Fi as well as the power supply network. Both connections work well and reinstate themselves quickly after the player has been switched off. The BT router automatically assigns fixed IP addresses to devices that connect to it. The only network problems I've had with this product came about because one of the power supply networking boxes was failing and worked intermittently. It took me a while to get the right diagnosis on this. But the problem was nothing to do with LG. There is, however, a network idiosyncracy that looks like a software problem.

I bought one of these and it connected to my wireless network fine, after about a week it refused to connect. I contacted LG support who took me through the script (I had already tried everything) they told me to send it back. The second worked for a few weeks and now I'm having the same problems. Networking only works with a cable trailing across my living room floor which isn't a good solution. I'm about to send this one back too and I'll get something from a different company.

Up to yesterday (23 Aug 13), I would have given this little machine 5 stars. Yesterday It refused to connect to my router through Wi-Fi. It either refuses to see any Wi-Fi network, or if it does (1 time in 10) it will find my SID and allow me to put in the password, show the connecting screen and then show the password screen again and again until I cancel. My router is about 2 feet away so I could use a cable and its fine connected by cable but that's not the point, its sold as Wi-Fi connecting machine. What is even more alarming is that I tried to re-set to factory settings in my many attempts to connect via Wi-Fi and the machine just hung and the only option was pulling out the plug (after half an hour)

I connected by cable and looked for any updated firmware in case there was a bug fix but it just said I had the most recent firmware.

My brother has the next model up from this and he has had intermittent connection problems, although so far he can still connect

There does seem to be issues with 2013 LG boxes regarding Wi-Fi connection and I would recommend avoiding them if Wi-Fi connection is really needed for you. If you can connect by cable then they are good little machines apart from the Wi-Fi; but get a discount on price, because che box only half works, network connection wise , as advertised.

I previously published a 5 star review on this as I was very pleased with the player.
I did see the reviews with wifi problems, but my unit was working great for weeks until the other day when the wifi problems started. I wondered if a few buyers were unlucky, but sadly this is not the case and there is a genuine issue with this unit and wifi.

Powering up the unit the wifi would not connect at all, sometimes it would see my connection, other times not at all (other devices such as laptops and tablets had no problems connecting) The LG prompted me to input my password for my network, over and over again, but never connecting.

I tried a factory reset, the firmware was updated the first day I got it with no problems at all with the wifi connection. I powered it off completely for an hour, still the wifi refused to connect.

As I wanted an all in one solution for Netfilx and DVD/Blu ray, the LG is a failure unless you connect it via wired LAN. As a player it still functioned, USB worked fine, but this wifi problem is a serious one and I was forced to return it to the retailer. They're not selling this model anymore (so they tell me), surprise! So I replaced it with a Samsung BD-F6500 which cost me a little more but I simply need a player that works for wifi and the LG is not reliable.

LG could have a really good blu ray player here (picture quality is very good, it's quiet playing discs, and loads them quickly, and whilst the streaming services are not comprehensive they're enough for most people, but there is clearly a problem with manufacturing. It's no shock the retailer isn't selling this anymore, but it caused some inconvenience and hassle having the unit's wifi fail.
