Hardware:

A good quality HD DVD Player in Blu-Ray format. It uses a standard SATA connection via the Mainboard of any PC thus uses less cabling and keeps the PC tidier. The playback quality is excellent with Blu-Ray movies although on a personal note I would highly recommend a high quality Graphics Processor in order to meet the demands of the player, I currently use a Radeon 4850 PCI-E HD GPU. The software package with the player does include a 'Blu-Ray Advisor' thus giving you a detailed overview of what you would need for best results (Driver/Firmware updates, hardware capabilities, etc).

It is very efficient at burning discs whether they be CD, DVD or Blu-Ray - The lightscribe feature can take a while to complete a task depending on the complexity of the designed label - it is however very precise, having used this for the first time.

Software:

Included with the Player is a Blu-Ray suite of applications, all designed to give you the best use of your player. For example, Cyberlink PowerDVD v8 for playing HD Movies or standard DVD Movies - it also includes a good quality package for designing labels for discs or case inserts (you can choose to print a design or use the lightscribe feature which gives a black and white effect 'etched' directly onto the disc).

Included Applications: PowerDVD v8, Power2Go (Disc burning), Power Producer (Disc Authoring), MediaShow (Photo Management) and LabelPrint

Further Comments:

One other thing I will add here. I am a keen gamer (cannot stand consoles though!) and have tested this hardware with Bioshock, Doom 3, Prey, FEAR, QUAKE 4, Alien vs Predator 2010 and all work perfect, hence no reduction in gameplay quality.

Blu Ray burner 17 Sep 2010
By Fingers
This drive is for PC savvy people, not lay people!

This burner is very reasonably priced and this is the reason why I finally jumped. The description is "bare" and this is completely true. There are no installation instructions or screws to fix it into your PC. It does however come with a Sata signal cable (about 30cms long) and a short power cable converter plug/socket to power the drive. However, if you are PC savvy then this should not be a problem as you are probably replacing an existing drive as an upgrade. Installing drivers is not really a problem as most Windows operating systems just recognise the drive on next power up after installation and then install appropriate drivers anyway.

With a complete lack of documentation in the box, I did feel that it would have been nice to at least have a description of the speeds and media types supported. Therefore I resorted to making a data sheet with all this data copied from other web-sites that have a fuller description of this drive!

Does it work? YES. I have successfully burned BD-RE discs, both with large data files (as a BD-ROM using Nero 7) but also as a Blu Ray video disc (from an image file created by a HD video editing program). The brand I used was Infiniti, also from Amazon. They stubbornly refused to burn at anything other than 1x rather than the 2x on the packaging. This is probably due to the firmware in the drive not having this brand "burned in" and therefore reverts to slowest safe speed. This is annoying, but seems to be a common problem with all optical drives whether Blu Ray or DVD.

The drive is very quiet in operation. No problems there.

The accompanying software CD disc that comes with the drive is full of Cyberlink software, much of it dated. The only really useful utility is one (not made by Cyberlink but LG) which can automatically update the firmware. I tried the lot but uninstalled everything else apart from this! The remaining LG Firware update did not work at first, as I have a firewall which automatically bans new programs from accessing the internet, unless I tell it not to! When I unbanned it, it successfully told me there was a firmware update available. I was a bit surprised but later realised that it not only found my new LG Blu Ray drive, but also my older LD DVD drive and offered me an update the DVD drive firmware from version 1.02 to 2.00. This I gladly accepted. So it does work, but again there are no instructions. I had tried in vain to find both the firmware updates and a downloadable manual on LG's web-sites. Hence the firmware program on the CD is vital as it accesses a special LG web-site that requires a hidden user-name and password. The program seems to have these built-in, so you need it. But a manual for the drive? Forget it.

To sum up. Overall, a very good price. It works fine. Software might be useful to some, but do install the LG Firmware updater program. Make your own data sheet! Two stars for poor software and complete lack of manual/instructions. 4 stars for operation, quiet and works. So overall, 3 stars I think.

Got this to complement the LG Blu-ray ROM/DVD-RW, the CH10. Beautiful piano gloss black finish. Nice, smooth positive action, almost silent in operation in both read and write. Will write to nearly all formats and doesn't appear to be brand specific either. Reads blu-ray as good as the CH10 and burning to blu-ray is also quick, especially when you consider the amount of data to write. The retail version comes with a SATA lead, Molex to SATA power adapter and Power2Go version 6 software, which is the full version. The software is easy to use and installs without fuss.
I can without doubt recommend this excellent piece of hardware, but do shop around, because prices will vary. So far to date, not one issue or problem with either the drive or the software.
However, do check your system specs, as this drive will not function in hi-def or be able to use blu-ray unless your system meets or exceeds the specification. This is a very important fact to bear in mind. Otherwise, if you have a high end machine, then go for it.
