2.0 out of 5 stars LG U8110 - great phone, naff network, 23 May 2004
This review is from: LG 8110 - 3 - Pay As You Go (Electronics)
after having a Panasonic GD67, which, when I press any buttons on it, the phone just stairs blankly doing nothing, which is immensely annoying. I therefore decided that it was time for a replacement phone, and after some searching I ventured out on a limb to the newly released LG U8110.

the phone is great, I can't really knock it too much, however I do have some quarrels about it.
1. The battery life is not impressive. I had the phone for 1 week and I found my self charging it everyday. I know people might think that this is because I was playing around with it a lot, using the camera, the flash, playing back MP3's and so on. But no, even without doing all this I still found myself charging it after each and every day.
2. I found that when holding the phone to answer a phone call, or even to make one, the phone didn't exactly fall nicely into your hand. It felt difficult as your figures where constantly on the outer display, rubbing general dirt and grimme from your hands onto the screen.
3. The buttons on the side of the phone where difficult to avoid when trying to txt, or make a phone call, and I often pressed the camera button when trying to scroll through the menu
4. If your a bloke and have not shaved in a wee while, you'll probably find that the phone does this for you. For some odd reason its seems to pull on the side of your face. I know this sounds weird, but after a pleasant conversation to a friend, the last thing you want is to say bye, by having hairs pull out of your face - not very pleasant.
5. I have only had 2 phones in 5 years, a Nokia 3210 and a Panasonic GD67. When I had the LG, I found that having an Arial on the phone to be very annoying - though this is not a serious issue.
6. The signal bar strength indicator is, in a word, bollocks. You can pretty much safely ignore anything that says. I'll expand on this point in a little while.

All of the above points are relatively minor points, and on the whole the phone is great and has the best menu and navigation system I have ever come across. The concept of having a flash (or light) is fairly nice, even though its pretty much naff, meaning there's no real point in using it, unless you so happen to be sitting at home, watching tv at night and all of a sudden the power cuts out. Then you can use your phones flash, as a sort or torch to go find your way to the fuse box.

There is however 1 major issue with the phone, and has resulted in me taking it back, only after a week of owning it. You see, the phone is, unfortunately only available on the 3 network. At first I thought, what they hey, the network will be fine. When indeed its anything but fine. 3 seem to have taken the point of view "we'll supply you a great mobile phone, with a network, that kind of works". This is to say, that when I walk into the city centre of Newcastle, I am not on fully signal strength. Ohhh no, I walk into WH smiths and thats it....kaput, not hope of making a phone call there. Dixons is the same, Fenwiks, infact, even the shop I bought it from...not a sausage of a signal. Now when I took my phone back I put it to them simply and I put it to you
"what is the point in owning a mobile phone, which its main principle is to enable communication between people, when this is the very thing the network 3 do not seem to be able to provide. "

However I will say, that this, is of course appearntly a known issue with 3. Appearntly it is acceptable that half way through a conversation the network will just randomly cut you of, just so you have to phone back, only for it to cut you of again 30 seconds later.

I would only recommend this phone on another network, other than 3. Or I would recommend this phone to someone who only has a memory recollection of 30 seconds, in which you would have forgotten about all your cut offs and have re-dialled assuming everything is hunky dory.

I agree with previous comments about signal with 3 but i havent had any major probs. I love this phone! video calling is just mad and its class to be able to use your mp3's a ringtunes. Camera quality aint that great even with flash at night comes out a tad grainy but ive had some brilliant day shots. Everyday i find something new about this phone and probably will do for some time! Buy it

4.0 out of 5 stars LG 8110 vs NEC e616, 31 July 2004

Well in short, LG 8110 is a better phone. Ive had both. Its smaller, smarter, better camera quality (marginally). Also the NEC's memory is partitioned into 5mb segments, so although the NEC has a bigger memory, each tune you upload cant be more than 5mb, whereas the LG does not have partitioning like that, allowing bigger or better quality tunes. The LG can use MP3s as ringtones, the NEC cant. The PC software is expectedly awkward but not unusable, the only problem is the network. 3 is still a bit weak. but in terms of size, finally a 3 video mobile that isnt like carrying a house brick in your pocket! Im happy with it, but take note......INSURE IT!!! 3 quoted me £400 for a replacement if its not insured!! STINGER! Good phone, PC software a bit iffy, but better overall than the NEC e616
