The LG 47LD950 - an excellent first passive 3D TV from LG,
This review is from: LG 47LD950 47-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p 200Hz 3D Ready LCD TV with Freeview (Electronics)
We bought this TV about two months ago and we are very pleased with it. After tweaking the display settings to our taste (changing contrast, brightness, black levels, etc.) we get an excellent picture on HD and SD programmes. The Sky 3D Channel programmes look amazing and there is virtually no ghosting visible when viewing 3D, unlike the LCD/LED active shutter-glasses 3D TVs. Some claim that passive 3D displays have half the vertical resolution compared to active displays. In practice, this isn't really true as all the 1080p detail is still there, just divided between the two eyes. We have found that the picture looks just as detailed as on active 3D TVs.
The passive glasses are the same as the free RealD ones from cinemas, and so all the kids can be equipped for nothing. We play 3D Blurays from a PlayStation 3 with v.3.50 firmware update, and there is an issue with this, but it is easily solved. When a 3D Bluray starts playing, the TV does not seem to synchronize the left and right frames properly resulting in a rippling effect that is difficult to watch - LG are aware of the problem and will be fixing this with a firmware update. In the meantime we have been told about an easy remedy by Shannon Dowsing of Inition, a UK-based stereoscopic equipment supplier, which works with the PS3 and also apparently with other 3D Bluray players (Shannon has tested it on the PS3 and the LG and Samsung 3D Bluray players). The fix is: (1) Turn TruMotion off, (2) play the disc, (3) toggle 3D off and on again with the TV remote's 3D button. This synchronizes the frames properly and then the 3D displays perfectly. We are just about to try 3D gaming from the PS3, which should look amazing. Various reports say it does, with the TV doing a good job with upscaling the 720p PS3 output. Also, there are no reported problems with the TV correctly synchronizing the stereoscopic frames for 720p/60Hz 3D mode. We've given the TV a 4/5 score because of the issue with Bluray playback, but this does seem to be a problem which will be addressed by LG in due course, and in the meantime the fix is easy and quick to carry out. We believe passive 3D will win out in the end, and feel that this TV is an excellent first outing of the technology. Things will get even better next year now that the RealD Z-screen has been licensed to TV manufacturers. This will mean we should start to see 3D TVs which use the same passive polarized glasses, but that display full 1080p frames to both eyes.

Excellent 2D with probably the best 3D available today!,

Having recently acquired one of these sets I can pretty much agree with every comment made by the first reviewer.
Moving from a shutter based system to a passive system then the superiority of the technology becomes clearly evident(every family member agrees). It doesn't just stop at the improved image quality either as the lightweight glasses are less intrusive during viewing, providing less eye-strain (will be the same as whatever you experience at the cinema) with no messing about with power buttons. The 2D image is also impressive with nice rich blacks (sadly missing from the Samsung 3D Plasma this set replaced) subject to making a few adjustments. The appearance of the set itself is very attractive and oozes quality (looks better in the home than at the shop for some reason) and makes a beautiful match with Glass Stand For LCD & Plasma TV up to 42" - Black. Nice touches are the inclusion of a proper power switch with twin LEDs to indicate if the set is ON, on Standby or OFF, an illuminated remote and like some other models the stand has a useful swivel feature. Some might be disappointed by the apparent lack of extra 'selling' points such as HD Freeview, DLNA, Internet services & 2D -> 3D conversion but most of those can added by the purchase of a Blu-ray 3D player which you'll need to buy anyway (check out the latest 2011 models for the best features). I haven't purchased a 3D player yet, as I intend buying one with 2D -> 3D conversion built-in, so can't comment on the issues mentioned in the 1st review but if it's as good as that provided by VirginMedia 3D cable feed then I'll be more than happy. I gather LG have promised a firmware update within a matter of weeks which should finally resolve this. I'd argue this set provides the best in home 3D experience today which is only likely to be bettered (or not?) when LG release their new 2011 Cinema 3D (passive) range later this year. UPDATE: LG have finally released firmware 3.70.03 (new sets will most likely already have this). This resolves the issue mentioned by the original reviewer, greatly improves USB playback and probably a few other things too. UPDATE2: Purchasing one of the new 3D blu-ray players that support 2D->3D has left me so amazed that I've bought another. This ability would seem to be a perfect match for passive technology. Watching old movies with the characters brought to life before your eyes really is like something out of sci-fi. This set is well worth purchasing for this feat alone, never mind the Full HD 3D films that can be played on it!

A real mixed bag...,
This review is from: LG 47LD950 47-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p 200Hz 3D Ready LCD TV with Freeview (Electronics)
I've had two of these sets from Amazon, and both demonstrated the same strengths and weaknesses:
Strengths: + Easy to set up - plenty of options to configure everything, including a picture wizard which tries to walk you through adjusting the brightness, contrast, etc, to get everything just right. + Overall, a very good picture when fed a HD picture (I didn't really try any SD sources) + Accurate looking colours and motion (with all the various processing bells and whistles turned off) + 3D content very comfortable to watch, and the LG's passive system seemed to be excellent. Weaknesses: - Awful backlight / uniformity. The reason I returned both sets. Having a set of horizontal and vertical 'shadows' showing up on bright backgrounds (e.g. watching football) made the LG unwatchable for me. - LG tech support (if you do have a problem, it's probably not worth consulting them) I appreciate that the backlighting issue probably won't affect every set sold. If either of the sets I'd received had shown a more uniform picture, I would have happily kept it. I've now moved on to a Sony Bravia KDL46EX503U 46-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p 100Hz LCD Internet TV with Freeview HD which has a pretty much perfect picture. (I didn't look at any other active 3D displays as I find them uncomfortable for viewing) Lastly, Amazon's customer service should get a mention - they were responsive and there were no problems replacing the first set and refunding the second time.
