Wishing to upgrade from our 5 year old 32" Thompson LCD TV, I looked at a lot of TVs, compared a lot of prices and read a lot of reviews before choosing the LG 42" LED.
Well done all you previous Amazon reviewers; your positive comments were spot-on and the high rating of this TV fully deserved!
Being one of the few sub-£500 big-screen LED backlits, this was comfortably within my budget - an important factor, when I decided to buy now to save a few quid before the VAT hike cuts in on 4th Jan. On opening the box, the first thing you'll notice is how beautifully slim the TV is - making plasmas and LCDs look anachronistically clunky! 8 small bolts (cross-head screwdriver required) secure the TV to the stand unit. Then it's just a matter of swapping over your leads - the generous provision of 4 HDMI sockets negated the need for the HDMI splitter we used up to now for SKY HD, DVD and XBOX, switch on and select the auto-tune option. 10 minutes later and you're up and running! I then eagerly selected an HD channel (it was showing Gary Moore's* superb set at the Strat Pack concert) and WOW! Pin-sharp picture with beautifully deep blacks and I could see every drop of sweat and pock-mark on Mr Moore's saggy jowls! To be honest, I can see little difference between the picture quality of this set and the far more expensive Sony, Panasonic and Phillips TVs. Lots of pre-set picture settings - Standard, Movie, Sport, Game etc are fun to experiment with, although I reckon the "Vivid" setting is really only suitable for watching my animé collection. Audio - often criticised on ultra-slim TVs, seems perfectly adequate to me and is no big deal, as I'll be using a 5.1 surround system anyway.
I was a little hesitant to buy a standard 50Hz TV, instead of a 100Hz, but needn't have worried. On watching sports VERY close-up, there is perhaps the faintest hint of smudge/blur on a fast-moving ball, but certainly nothing to ruin the average punter's enjoyment.
Haven't yet used the USB option, but am sure I will.
Only thing I wasn't really impressed with was the user manual, which covers some 20 different TVs and is not particularly easy to follow. Luckily. a more comprehensive manual is supplied as a PDF file on CD.
To summarise, I'm happy that I made the right decision not to be tempted by the heavily discounted plasma TVs and to go for the newer LED-backlit technology instead. I can whole-heartedly recommend this TV.
PS. To use with your SKY remote, select SKY Interactive > Remote Control and enter code 0206.
* PPS. RIP Gary Moore - still can't believe the legendary bluesman is no longer with us!
