The good and the bad - the LG-37LE5300,
By
This review is from: LG 37LE5300 37-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p 100Hz LED TV with Freeview (Electronics)
I owned this LED for a few days and here are my thoughts.
Cons Panel lottery - there are two panel versions for this screen. Not all are equal. One is a TN panel and the other is an IPS. I got the TN version unfortunately. Meaning the colour fidelity and viewing angles are poor. Sitting from a 45 degree angle, on one of my side chairs in the living room shows how poor the viewing angle is. Even sitting slightly higher or lower than the screen position will cause colour washout (black appears blueish grey). Luckily I sit head on most of the time, but you may not so bare this in mind. Good luck finding an IPS version as they are rare. You can tell if you have a TN or and IPS from the box. If the product code has a D in it then it is a TN, if you get a W then it's an IPS. The only two possible benefits in getting a TN panel would be for gaming as the input lag is superior and the blacks are darker. Backlight - there is obvious backlight leaking around the edges (this is a common issue with edge lit LEDs). This isn't particularly distracting for day use but at night watching a film (Moon for instance with Sam Rockwell) shows the problem acutely. The backlight is also fairly uneven. Google 'Mura effect' for more info. Banding - there is severe banding on vertically panning images. A much darker tint / band 2/3rds of the way down the screen. This is most noticeable on subtle white or grey vertically panning imagery. As a test I put on the snowy scenes from 71 Degrees North in HD and it was terribly distracting. TruMotion - this causes a rather unpleasant `floaty' feel to movement, almost unnatural. This setting is more suited to fast moving sport action. On a film it looks totally out of place and it gives everything a camcorder amateur look. Moving images seems to exhibit some artifacting too. There is also `fizzing' around fast moving objects. It would seem LG have not mastered this technology. The Motionflow feature on Sony screens works better, but I'm not a fan of interpolated images in general. I turned it off, it's more a marketing gimmick that a real world benefit. HD images - disappointingly average. Slightly soft and lacking crispness. I bought a SONY-KDL40EX403U last week and it produced a much sharper image (however this was returned to John Lewis due to horrific banding, juddery pictures and backlight buzz). Pros Standard Definition - The panel deals well with SD sources. It seems to cancel out many of the unpleasant noise at a viewing distance of 10 ft. Moving images - much clearer than the aforementioned Sony. The difference is night a day to me. The Sony gave me a headache; the LG even with TruMotion off is smooth and clear. Absolutely no backlight buzz from the back panel (even with my ear to the unit) Sound - better that I would expect for such a slim design. Works well with most programmes. Crisp and easy to pick out dialogue (especially with Clear Voice II on!). However the LG lacks bass for films, this was noticeable with the recently BBC HD broadcast of Blade Runner - the intro sequence sounds flat and lifeless. I'd recommend connecting up a home cinema audio system for movies. Slim design - looks great mounted on a wall. Nicely understated contemporary design too. An edge of silver around a black frame - sleek. Energy saving - set to minimum it darkens the picture so the backlight bleed isn't as obvious. Not only that if saving me £ over the space of a year. Tempered with the LED using much less watts than a similar sized LCD this is a clear benefit. USB connectivity - works beatifully. Internet downloaded .avi files play perfectly off the USB stick. The remote also works well with this mode. I also like the way you can resume from where you left off if you have to leave the screen for whatever reason. Overall File under below average, or a D if you like conventional scoring systems. The LG 37-LE5300 does many things well but also does many things poorly. I love and hate this screen. The cons (manufacturing defect - namely banding) outweighed the pros, so I sent it back for a refund. Kudos to Amazon for their no nonsense returns policy; Amazon picked up the TV and refunded the full amount including carriage. Brilliant service once again from the best online retailer in the world. I will order a TV again from Amazon. I'll probably go for a Panasonic IPS panel next - probably the TX-L37D25B Panasonic Viera TX-L37D25B 37-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD TV with Freeview HD and Freesat HD. IPS panel and stellar reviews! I doubt I will attain LED LCD perfection but I'm willing to continue the search for something I can live with.

Fantastic tv ,very sharp picture, clear voice works very well this was the main reason i brought this model.I must disagree with the buyer that said the LED edge lighting shows on dark scenes,i have mine on 100% and can not see any sign of this problem.I also like the energy saving mode,it all helps! The guide is very clear with PIP.This tv also twists on its stand,i did not know this before buying.very pleased with this tv highly recommended, great value for money.

LG 37LE5300 37-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p 100Hz LED TV with Freeview
Excellent picture quality in HD at 100 hz. Good colour representation and blacks are excellent. Set up was easy after diagnosing a faulty HDMI cable linking the TV to my set top box. Two criticisms... could have done with two scart sockets and it was not possible to transfer the volume control to my set top box remote. These apart I would fully recommend this TV.
