Nothings changed since I was a toddler (not that long ago, don't worry!), and the Lego Track is still the same - as is how much track is included in the Lego Train sets! Unfortunately, a small oval can b very restricting for the nice scale of the Lego Trains, so this is highly reccomended. It allows you to add your own influence to your train scene - I used to attatch my own stations, telephone boxes, and other unique things to the side of my track, and I strongly suggest you invest in extra track to make your Lego train journeys a tad more exciting!
As usual, the quality is excellent - I could never fault Lego in anyway, and I still can't!
