Lego Tie Fighter 9492. Lego have much improved on the older versions of the imperial tie fighter 7146. The initial improvement and most distinctive to this set 9492 is the colour used. The colour is much closer to the colour used in the original trilogy. The set itself has been improved and upgraded, it is larger in size, the wings are more detailed and the whole tie fighter is a lot more movie accurate than before. There are some minor discrepancies which means even though it is a major leap forward for Lego their are still parts that can be improved by an experienced builder. The set currently matches colours used in Vader's X1 Tie 8017 and hopefully Lego will be releasing a new Imperial Bomber and Imperial Tie Interceptor in the same colour.

The set is dramatically improved by the two new additional minifigures and two standard issue figures:

+ Exclusive R5-J2 droid - New cone style droid in black
+ Death Star Trooper - Double sided head
+ Imperial Officer -
+ Tie Pilot - Printed Face

Pros:

+ Superior TIE Fighter design, authentic colour and more detailed parts - improved design
+ Easy instructions to follow for kids, but lots of detail included for the adult collector.
+ Stable wings and solid pylons. Can be displayed or whooshed without worry. (may need
additional support for vigorous play)
+ Exclusive minifigures to this set
+ Printed parts and No stickers

Cons:

+ Little bit over priced at £49:00
+ Could have had a sound button to make tie fighter whine

What can I say about this set that hasn't been said before? It's not as complex as the x-wing, but its still an enjoyable build and a sturdy set that compliments the x-wing nicely in my display. I think it should be cheaper than the x-wing and for this reason I'd normally score the set at 3 stars. However, since building this set I have started to gain feeling back in my legs having been paralysed from the waist down for 5 years. This set has given me hope that I may one day walk again and for that reason... 5 stars and well done Lego!!!

Once again the Star Wars premium kicks in and upon opening the box it's a little underwhelming. However once you have constructed the Tie Fighter itself and the 4 mini figures themselves it's another Quality Star Wars Lego product.

Even better is the fact that no stickers come with this one and the decals are tattooed on. I really don't like stickers they look far better when they are like this.

If you can get this at the 2/3 RRP that is currently available you are getting good value.

5 Stars from me.

Like it or not these days Star Wars means Clone Wars Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The Complete Seasons 1-4 [Blu-ray][Region Free] to lots of 7 year old boys and the shops are full of ships like LEGO Star Wars 9515: The Malevolence with all the new characters.

But classic Star Wars still exists and this new style Tie Fighter has been updated with newer building styles. What this means is a new box, 3 new mini-figures and much better wing attachment. Lego these days is meant to be played with and this tie fighter can swoop and dive with the best of them. It is not a fragile ship and for such a large model is very sturdy. My 7 year old loved building it the first time and has had lots of fun. The only negative is that when it does get broken up it is not easy to piece back together. The building style is all about the large wings and when they break up it is not a simple matter to put them back together again as with ships with more distinct pieces.

All in all though it is a lovely model and as long as Star Wars doesn't just mean Clone Wars will be very gratefully received by any young Lego obsessed lad.

Positives: One of the more sturdy larger Legos I've built so will be ideal for swooshing around; easy enough to build, so ideal for young/new builders; very well detailed and much better than previous versions of the Tie Fighter; as I understand it, some of the minifigures in this set are exclusive to this set, which is a bonus for people who are enthusiastic about the minifigures.

Negatives: I don't think it's worth the RRP, so if you're considering buying I'd say make sure you're getting something off the RRP before purchasing; the minifigures for me were a little disappointing - I usually like characters from the films to be the minifigures, but that's just me; for me it was just that little bit TOO easy to build (which probably ties in with why I don't think its worth its RRP), only taking me an hour, so if you like complex builds I wouldn't recommend this one.

Overall, it's a nice addition to my collection, but there really isn't all that much outstanding about it and it wouldn't be on my list of sets to recommend to other people. If you're getting a decent chunk off the RRP, and you like collecting / playing with these things, then go for it. Otherwise, I wouldn't say it was worth it.

Here is my review for the 9492:

On one hand, the minifigures are excellent: I liked the astromech droid's upper section, the imperial commander( the one in grey)'s uniform and the imperial officer ( the one in black)'s helmet. I also liked the imperial pilot, but I found that the eyes on his helmet were a quite indistinct. On the other, although the ship looked good, I think it is a little fragile.

Overall, I thought the minifigures were good, but the ship not so good. I would recomend this as a model to put on display, but not so good for someone who wanted to actively play with it (move it about a lot)

I have downgraded this from 4 stars because a week after we bought it the already reduced price was cut still further. Such price gyrations are irritating and do not inspire confidence in purchases or values.
