this is a great lego kit of the nasa/jpl curiosity mars rover. designed by a real nasa jpl engineer who worked on the real thing but also designed this lego model. the lego website has now discontinued this product and prices are climbing as it is collectable. very accurate model, made of lego. key features include articulated suspension (no springs) and front mounted robot arm. there is also a moveable mast with geological survey head with cameras. all these details are covered in the extensive booklet supplied, including building instructions. will appeal to all ages of space enthusiasts, or lego builders/collectors. parents of young children may have to supervise as there are several small parts which could be a choking hazard to the very young.

its worth looking at videos of this on you tube, which will help you decide to part with some money for it. ignore the comments about getting this for $30 usd, as lego no longer supply it. the real thing is still running happily on mars, as pictures on nasa's website show.

great for space education, as well as fun to look, hold and play with, just be careful no small parts become detatched when played with by younger children. intermediate building skills required.

Great set. Currently a very limited supply. 25 Jan. 2014
By R. Ferguson - Published on
This set is part of Lego's CUUSOO (now Ideas) line in which the public submits and votes on models that they would like to see Lego produce. This is Lego's 5th CUUSOO model. It arrived January 1st, 2014 with an MSRP of 29.99. Due to significant interest in the model, supplies have been very tight. It is worth checking at Lego to see the current status of the model. Expect price to go up significantly once the model is retired.

This is Lego's third Mars rover. The first two dated from 2003 (sets 7469 and 7471) and represented NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers (Spirit and Opportunity) that landed on the red planet in January of 2004. This set (21104) represents the Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity) which landed on Mars in August of 2012. Interestingly, the Lego model was designed by Stephen Pakbaz, a NASA engineer at JPL who helped design the actual rover. Lego's CUUSOO blog has a nice introduction to the model and Pakbaz. Do a Google search of "lego cuusoo rover pakbaz".

The set is very well done. It is not a large model, however, and its functions are fairly simple (six-wheel suspension system, mast-mounted camera, and robotic arm with scientific instruments). The instructions, printed on black, contain some information about the actual rover. There are some creative building techniques used with the model, and it has some playability, though it is not mini-figure scale. If you can get a hold of the set for a reasonable price, it is a great gift for space junkies. I do want to stress, again, that this is a small model with modest functions.

Great for inspiring exploration play 27 Jan. 2014
By K. Luangkesorn - Published on
First, this is a great set for building. The instructions are well done, and the set uses some sophisticated techniques so you will likely learn something along the way.

For play, it is great. The suspension is the highlighted feature, as the model was in part developed in the first place to demonstrate how the suspension works on the real thing. But what my 3-year old son loves the most is the fact that this is an explorer. He likes driving the rover to various corners or objects and manipulating the camera to inspect various objects, which is what the real thing was created to do! Wonderful inspiration through play.

I love the design features of this little feller. And, as a matter of fact, the only thing I don't like about this rover model is the price! My husband bought this for me as a gift (I am a science geek), but, holy supernova, the cost of it blows my mind. C'mon, Legos, knock it off.

if you are interested in space science and also love lego this is an excellent set. it has so many details and a very fun build. the building instructions are top notch with an intro to mars science over the years and small notes and pictures of the real rover as you build.
