My 6 year old was given this for her birthday. Having spent much of the previous day making LEGO City and Creator kits and playing with them, she was pleased to get this and loved the way it looked. However, it contains very little to build. I'd say it was a starter kit for people new to LEGO, but that's not the case since it has loads of really small fiddly bits for the lab. Also the figure, whilst similar to a regular mini-figure in size, can't be manipulated in the same way (eg there are no holes in the bum, so you can't fix her to a chair, her hands don't rotate). LEGO have made a bit of effort to avoid accusations of stereotyping in this set (if not some of the others in the range) by making it a science lab, and since their mother is a scientist I was happy with this. However, the character is wearing inappropriate clothes for a lab - I'd have preferred to see her in a lab coat and more appropriate shoes!
From reading around about this new range it seems that LEGO have found that girls don't like building as much as they like the playing with the characters they can relate to. I can't speak for girls in general, but it's not true of my two, so we'll stick to LEGO City and Creator. If that's what your kids prefer I suspect they'd be happier with Polly Pocket or the many other ranges of dolls and characters.
I find it a shame. If LEGO think their other ranges aren't girl-friendly enough they could have just extended the City and Creator ranges. I was concerned that my daughter would be so bowled over by the colours and (overly) feminine aspects of this set. I needn't have bothered, since she quickly tired of it, and incorporated the character into some of her other more complex sets.

My daughter is called Olivia, she is mad about science and mad about Lego so it was a foregone conclusion that I was going to buy this toy for her, despite its hefty retail price of £10.
When it arrived it took her about a third of the time to put together as other Lego sets of a similar size which dimmed her excitement somewhat, as so much of her enjoyment comes from following the instructions to make the toy.
I wasn't very impressed with the 'girl' colours, they seemed to be a wishy washy attempt to appease everyone and are very different from the bold, bright colours of normal Lego. The figure isn't as good as a normal Lego figure as you can't sit it down or move its limbs in the same way- its an interesting novelty though. The microscope is delicately attached so it comes off everytime it is played with which is annoying to say the least.
After the initial excitement this kit has barely been played with and she has gone back to making her own innovative creations using the original genderless bricks that she inherited from her father and I.

My daughter always loved "playing" lego with her brother, and sometimes Dad as well. However, when it came to the various "kits", whether it be Star Wars, Ninjago, Pirates, etc..., those never really capitavated her interest as much as it did her brother and Dad. So, she was delighted to discover that this range had launched and was compatible with other legos and included female characters.
These kits can be overpriced for what they are but if you have bought lego before, you will be used to that. They do offer unique building opportunities and the kits, such as this one, that are under £10 have proven to be a lot of fun for her and her friends. For those kids who have a box full of legos accumulated through the years, as these are compatible in size, it allows her to build "towns" and "neighbourhoods" or whatever her and her brother or friends dream up.
This range offers new colours, designs and characters and has proven a big hit with my daughter and her friends.
Recommended to all lego fans - especially girls.
