5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! 8 Dec 2011

Could this be the greatest Lego model ever made?

This is a fantastic model. Over 1300 pieces go into the van which, once complete, is about a foot long and is pleasingly solid. I've built lots of Lego models over the years which have felt a bit fragile and flimsy, but this is quite heavy when finished and actually quite sturdy (obviously you wouldn't throw it around the room though...)

The detail is just wonderful. The van has four opening doors, plus the front two windows open, as does the rear window and the engine cover. The engine is visible but sadly is just there for show, so don't expect its components to move (this isn't Technic). On the top the "pop" roof section lifts up and is stronger than its looks, the orange side made of a woven material which neatly concertinas when the roof is dropped. The roof is held on in four places and lifts off to allow you to see inside. The interior is amazing. The floor is tiled in a black & white check design, the windows have curtains, a picture hangs on one wall and a T-shirt with "Make Lego Models Not War" emblazoned on the front hangs in a window. There is a cabinet with a mirrored door, a lava lamp a cactus, a glass of wine on the folding table, a pan & a brush hanging over the wash basin, and the rear seat folds down to make a bed.

I built the model over three evenings and since then it has sat on our mantelpiece where everyone who has seen it has raved about how great it looks, from teenagers to an 80 year-old. It is quite a fiddly build in places and so I wouldn't recommend it for young children, but for big kids like me it is brilliant.

Is it worth the price? Shop around and you will find it for less than this (I paid £80) but I don't begrudge what I spent on it at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! 21 Mar 2012
Durability: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
We bought this for my son at Christmas (he's 11). We did worry it would be too complicated as it is a 16+, but its fine - although he is very good at following the instructions! It takes about 3-4 hours solid legoing (is this a word?!) to make. He has made it 3 times now, the first time was a bit disappointing as just as he finished it, the engine fell out of the bottom, and he couldn't get it back in without taking the whole thing apart and starting again. However subsequent building has been very successful. The detail is increadible - lava lamp, a sink, drawers, movable gear stick, foot pedals, fabric curtains and fully operational pop top! (although the VW splitty by rights shouldn't have a pop top!!). Expensive yes, but much much better than any of the other lego sets he has - and he's got most sets!

When he isn't on-line or gaming, my teenage son is into media and design, and has bought into the VW camper van lifestyle image, having photos of them on his cups, wall and keyrings (we generally have seaside holidays each year). My son dreams of buying a real split-screen Type 2 VW camper van. As my son was always fond of Lego in his youth and this model is a more serious Lego model aimed at ages 16+ (probably as much for what it is a model of, as much as the difficulty in building it), we knew it would make an ideal present for him. The Volkswagen Type 2 is the camper van, first introduced in 1950, whereas the Volkswagen Type 1 was the original beetle car. Later revisions of the Type 2 transporter van appeared and were designated T1, T2, T4, T25 etc. Some VW vans had a standard sealed roof, or a large lift up flap or the raised vertical tent top as seen on this Lego camper van. The design of this Lego camper van is based on the original 1950s split screen Type 2 T1 camper van with the classic chrome V down the front and two colour paint finish (Lego say it's a 1962 model).

Anyway my son was very pleased to get it for Christmas - he had noticed it in the Lego Christmas magazine but hadn't said anything. So the first thing he did when free on Christmas day and Boxing day was build this model. It took around five hours and kept him in the front room with us. Once finished the model went proudly on display on the bedroom shelves recently cleared of his childhood toys and books. He had a few bits of bother finding the odd Lego piece (the axles were hidden in a small bag inside the bigger ones, and the lego bags aren't labelled so it's not clear where to look - easier building sets have numbers on the bags to help).

Lovely detail, clear instructions and many pieces to put together, unlike some of the new Lego which has preformed sections. Looks great when finished

5.0 out of 5 stars Looks better than the picture on the box 26 Mar 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this for my Daughter who loves cars and Lego. She has learning difficulties and found previous purchases within her scope. This one she needed assistance which her older brother was quite happy to help. It took them approx 7 hours on a Saturday afternoon and they thoroughly enjoyed it (and they are not children!!!). It looks great on the shelf. Only problem was one piece was missing but after contacting Lego they sent it in the post and now it is complete. It says on the box for 16+ but if younger ones receive help it will get there minds working. Well done Lego, Amazon and the Supplier.
