On the occasion of her seventh birthday my eldest was really pleased to receive this Lego City horse box and 4 by 4 to add to her growing collection of models. It's a smallish model, made up of 176 pieces in all, and in our experience fun to construct and with a great deal of play value once it has been made.
The set comes in two bags, the first contains the vehicle and horse and two figures, and the second all you need to make the trailer. Aimed at the 5-12 age group, I found that my daughter needed next to no help to make the set, the car took her slightly longer to build as it was nearly 30 steps long, but the trailer was quite a quick build. You could build the items in two sittings if need be, but I found my daughter had made both in about half an hour; she's fairly used to following Lego instructions, and these ones were straightforward and clear, as we have come to expect from Lego. She did struggle a little with some of the finer detail of the car, which is quite realistic and has wing mirrors and very realistic lights, these particular pieces were quite small and fiddly but extra seem to have been provided in the set should any go astray.
As well as the vehicle and trailer, the set contains two figures, one rider and what I assume is a groom, to drive the car. The detail on the horse is quite pleasing; you can add and remove a saddle to him into which the little hard-hatted figure sits comfortably. It's a bit of a shame that the car doesn't have opening and closing doors (you have to put the driver in the car via the roof which is a bit tricky to remove and replace) as the rest of the set has been well designed for play after construction. Apart from the rider being able to ride the horse realistically there's also a fence included to jump and the horse fits nicely into the trailer. There's not an actual seat in the car for the rider, just the driver but this doesn't seem to worry my daughter who has been happy to build extra jumps for the horse and wheel the whole thing around. The car fits well to the trailer via a ball joint - the whole thing once built is solid and holds together well.
Lego purists may not like the fact that the trailer walls are made of rather big pieces, but it's nice to have a set that isn't a garish colour and which looks quite realistic. I quite like the fact that this is a compact item which is in scale with other items in the range - you should be aware though that it's a lot smaller than it looks on the picture, the car is under 10 cm long and about 7 cm high.
As I said earlier this set was actually a gift - it seems to vary in price from around the £12 to the £25 mark - at the lower price it is, in my opinion, good value and it was certainly a great gift! I should think this would appeal to girls and boys alike, it's fun to build and great to play with once it has been made. Recommended.
