The previous Duplo police station set (5602) featured a small building, three figures (2 policeman and 1 robber) and one vehicle (a police dog van complete with dog). This new version has much more included with a double-sized building, an additional figure and three vehicles: a car, a helicopter and a motorbike. These vehicles were a big hit with our 3 and 7 year old, and really make this set a big improvement on the last edition in terms of value and playability (they are large enough to be stand alone toys).
As you'd expect with Duplo, the set is well constructed from a safety point of view, given the target age-range of 2-5, with large construction pieces and nothing that could become sharp, eaten or put in nostrils or ears! The vehicles are largely made of one solid piece each so easily survive fairly rough play and so work well as toys, not simply something to assemble. One thing to note is that the police station building, which comes in fairly typical lego-construction form, is way too complicated for a toddler or even older child to put together, but at least is open for smaller hands to "adapt" it during play once someone slightly older has done the initial construction. A positive from this is, as children get older, there's scope to use the pieces more creatively than the one design in the instructions to increase the play value of the set.
Although the ages of 2-5 are the guide on the box, the number of vehicles and the cops and robbers theme made this set a hit with both our 3 and 7 year old boys and is something they can, and do, both play with together. The solid construction and lack of small, easy to lose, pieces means it should have a long lifespan too.
