There is more than enough in this DVD to keep the 'beginner' fencer occupied and informed for the first few years of their fencing training. As it says in the DVD, it is not designed to replace lessons from a well qualified coach, but to supplement them. At the same time, coaches could certainly use the DVD to illustrate their lessons.
As it is split into nearly 50 short chapters (the lunge, the parry, etc.) it is easy to find the specific point you're practising and see clearly how it should be done. Thereafter, it's always there as a reference to go back to.
So 5 stars if that's how you want to use it. I gave it four because I would ideally have liked a slightly longer 'Fighting' section, where perhaps the commentator talks us through a few examples of real fights, explaining what attack has been made, what defensive strategy has been employed, etc, and therefore showing how the referee came to the decision they did. Most exchanges in fights happen too fast for beginners and even TV commentators to keep up, so a bit of clarification there would be a welcome addition to the NEW titles in the series that I hear are coming out this year (Epee and Sabre)!
Well worth the investment.
