"L'avare", or "The Miser" is a great example of Molière's work and is an ideal play to read if you're thinking of doing some extra reading before applying to read French at university (it's short, easy to translate and is a French 'classic'). Although the humour is not side-splitting, it is lightly amusing and a pleasant read (but is better if seen performed). The play centres around Harpagon whose preoccupation with his "écues" (valuable gold coins) blinds him as to the romances that he is spoling with his selfishness. The play is fickle but it's fun!
