"Scotland's very own Michael Crichton"-- Aberdeen Express

Product Description

Ex-Special Forces medic, Dr Steven Dunbar of the Sci-Med Inspectorate investigates an apparent attack by animal rights activists on a research institute in rural Norfolk. The director of the institute has been murdered after having been horrendously tortured and several experimental monkeys have been released into the wild. While police interest centres on the murder, Sci-Med's concern is focused on what the escaped animals might be infected with.

Steven is assured that it was only 'flu virus but why has the army been called in to hunt down and kill the freed animals – wearing full biohazard gear?

This title was first published by Allison & Busby Ltd. in the UK in 2007. It is the sixth Dr Steven Dunbar novel.

Nice try 4 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Some of this story worked well and at times it was quite exciting but I thought it was filled with a lot of unnecessary and unentertaining descriptive text that added little or nothing and felt that I had to wade through this dross to the next piece of dialogue to keep the story flowing. Nothing a good editor couldn't sort out though.

Ken's done it again, he has written another BLOCKBUSTER of a book, that is very topical and very believable. Again Ken has mixed some current scientific facts with a pinch of imagination and come up with a great story that is gripping and fast moving. I highly recommend this book, and had recommended it to a good friend who works in the business of manufacturing bird flu vaccines, and he is now backtracking on Dr Dunbar's career so far.

The novel begins with a raid on a research facility during which a leading biochemist is murdered and lab-animals released. Investigator Dr Steven Dunbar is called in and although his investigations initially reveal that the murdered scientist's work was simply related to production of flu vaccine, something just doesn't 'sit right' with Dunbar....

I found this a very enjoyable medical-politics thriller. It was pleasingly pacey and refreshingly allowed the reader to solve the mystery as the plot unfolded. I also found it very witty in places and enjoyed McClures digs at 'government organisation speak'.

flawed but ok
I agree with those who found this book a little disappointing. It had a believable premise but the characters were a bit wooden, and the twists were pretty obvious. Read more

Too easy to thrill
This was, for me, an OK read, but not memorable. Not a particularly original story, I soon worked out the plot and the various twists and turns were a little too well-signposted... Read more

The Lazarus Strain
Interesting subject. Well written, easy reading, took only hours to finish. The ending was predictable, I knew "who did it" quite early on in the book. Read more
