Reviews

Created by Steven Bochco (Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue) and Terry Louise Fisher (Cagney & Lacey), LA Law is the multi award-winning courtroom drama that was a huge commercial and critical hit.

In the second season, Brackman unwittingly gets arrested for solicitation by an inexperienced undercover policewoman who mistakes his reading of a Japanese restaurant menu for come-ons. Meanwhile, Roxanne tells Kuzak and Becker that she is willing to reject immunity to stand by Jimmy during his trial for insider trading. Victor represents Lorna Landsberg, a food critic being sued by a restaurant owner after she gave a scathing review of the place that cost it heavily. Grace receives and accepts a lucrative partnership offer with an old friend from law school. At the end, Kelsey tells Markowitz about her part in Roxanne's insider stock tips, which takes a sudden turn when they are both mugged by an infamous, well-dressed robber known as "the yuppie bandit."

Fantastic to see that the second series (1987/1988) of LA LAW is out less than five months after series 1. A worldwide first! This series originally screened on ITV back in 1988 on Thursdays at 9pm and all 20 episodes can be found on this discset.

1 - "The Lung Goodbye" (14 January 1988)
2 - "The Wizard of Odds" (21 January 1988)
3 - "Cannon of Ethics" (28 January 1988)
4 - "Brackman Vasektimized" (4 February 1988)
5 - "The Brothers Grimm" (11 February 1988)
6 - "Auld L'Anxiety" (18 February 1988)
7 - "Rohner vs. Gradinger" (25 February 1988)
8 - "Goldilocks and the Three Barristers" (3 March 1988)
9 - "Divorce with Extreme Prejudice" (10 March 1988)
10 - "Full Marital Jacket" (17 March 1988)
11 - "Gorilla My Dreams" (24 March 1988)
12 - "Hand Roll Express" (31 March 1988)
13 - "Beauty and Obese" (7 April 1988)
14 - "Pettycoat Injunction" (14 April 1988)
15 - "The Bald Ones" (21 April 1988)
16 - "Fetus Completus" (12 May 1988)
17 - "Belle of the Bald" (19 May 1988)
18 - "Open Heart Perjury" (26 May 1988)
19 - "Leapin' Lizards!" (2 June 1988)
20 - "Chariots of Meyer" (9 June 1988)

Returning stars from the first series we have Harry Hamlin, Susan Dey, Corbin Bernsen, Jimmy Smits, Jill Eikenberry, Alan Rachins, Michele Greene, Michael Tucker, Susan Ruttan and Richard A Dysart. Debuting in this series we see Blair Underwood join the cast as Jonathan Rollins and Larry Drake as Benny Stulwitz.

Well that's two down and eight more to go! Hopefully the whole series will be out by the end of next year! Thank you Revelation Films for making this release happen. I expected that the chances of LA LAW ever being released were nil. It's great that the UK is the first (and so far only) country to have the series on DVD. Any chance you could do the same for NYPD Blue?

Looking forward to series 3!

20 episodes this season. There are two worthy additions to the law firm. Blair Underwood makes controversial impact as Rollins (master of audacious tactics, if necessary, to secure victory). Mentally challenged Benny joins as messenger (Larry Drake's performance earning much praise and often most moving). Richard Dysart as Leland McKenzie again captains his occasionally unruly crew. Pennypinching Douglas Brackman is now a judge, his private life in greater need of calling to order. Kuzak and Grace continue to spar and make up, as indeed do Stuart and Ann. True love at last for divorce lawyer Arnie? As if!

Highlights include the early morning meetings, reminders that the firm handles far more work than we actually see. The court cases still fascinate. They include the bizarre (damages claimed when a human cannonball lands on a member of the audience, also when an old man attacks another with his artificial leg). More serious are those involving diplomatic immunity claimed by a rapist, racial prejudice alleged when defending an alleged thief, conscientious workers sacked because of their weight or age, a cocky sleazeball who swindled pensioners out of their savings. It pleases to see Leland himself once or twice prosecuting or defending, which in Season I he never did. Guest star dwarf David Rappaport mesmerizes as a wily lawyer using his lack of size to win the jury's sympathy, Jimmy Smits as Victor towering (and glowering) beside him. (Keep an eye out for a young Christian Slater in Episode 16.)

The show seems so set in the present, it is hard to believe it was aired a quarter of a century ago. The dead giveaway is the virtual absence of computers and cellphones, now so ubiquitous.

Second Season is as great as season one, picture is OK, though people have other standards now thanks to HD. But this is the late 80s and early 90s. Also no english subtitles, which would have been nice, but OK. And of course no extras whatsoever...but who cares, I am happy that they make this great series available for us. Enjoy crazy lawyers and even more crazy clients and their struggles for Right and Justice. Hopefully the other seasons will follow up. Buy this!!! As always, the episode titles are a hoot for themselves:

1. The Lung Goodbye
2. The Wizard of Odds
3. Cannon of Ethics
4. Brackman Vasektimized
5. The Brothers Grimm
6. Auld L'anxiety
7. Rohner vs. Gradinger
8. Goldilocks and the 3 Barristers
9. Divorce with extreme Prejudice
10. Full Marital Jacket
11. Gorilla of my dreams
12. Hand Roll Express
13. Beauty and Obese
14. Petticoat Injunction
15. The Bald Ones
16. Fetus Completus
17. Belle of the Bald
18. Open Heart Perjury
19. Leapin' Lizards
20. Chariots of Meyer

I watched this in the 80's and enjoyed it then, re-watching it has been even more enjoyable. Not many 'law' series have managed to match up to LA Law. Good acting and good story lines. Will be startign Season 4 shortly - can't wait!!
