Format: Paperback
This is an essential read for the Lowry fan. Shelly Rhodes has delved into every corner to research this book. The book carries a life story of someone who tried to keep his two secret lives apart. The rent collector and clark Vs The Artist.
A man who worked by day and painted by night. A man who died yet had no registered doctor. He lead the galleries a merry dance, all looking for a few painting in his will, they courted him in his old age. Yet he left them all to a girl also called Lowry who wrote him a letter years before, asking how she could become an artist...
A remarkable man... nice book
(This is a serious biography not an art book.)

A outstanding look at L.S.Lowry. Packed with the most detailed information any art lover could ever want on Britain's most famous artist. A truly great read. I tip my hat to Ms. Rohde for her detail and dedication.

By B. G. Strand on 25 Jun. 2013
Format: Paperback
Shelley's exhaustive ,but very readable biography charts the life and times of perhaps the most under rated English artist of the 20th century. A painter who despite the lack of recognition during his prolific 'industrial 'period continued to do it 'his way' and produced his masterpieces whilst continuing his job as a rent collector. His refusal of a knighthood from the 'establishment' in later life also complements a character that produced the theme of his major work, truly a 'man of the people'. Extensive notes together with pictures to illustrate the author's text makes this an essential read for every serious student of English art.

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This book was purchased as a gift for a member of my family who has recently moved to live in the Salford area and we went recently to visit the Lowery exhibition at Salford Quays. Many of the photographs in the book are of paintings on display in the art gallery at the Lowery. A good illustrated and factual book.
