You might feel like throwing your keyboard and trackball away after using Voice Xpress Standard, but hang on to them (at least for old-time's sake). Voice recognition has advanced very quickly, and now it's almost as easy to direct Windows software with the larynx as with the fingers. This package has much to recommend it: fast startup time, a transparent interface, integration with popular Microsoft, Lotus, and Corel programs (as well as many more). You'll be dictating into the headset accompanying the package literally minutes after installation, and you'll direct pull-down menus and dialogue boxes without reaching for a mouse. Voice Xpress Standard uses its Natural Language Technology to recognise your meaning even if your choice of words differs from command to command, and it responds well to training. You can spend extra time teaching it the nuances of your vocal style or clean up afterward when the mistakes crop up, whichever suits your work style best. Of course, you'll occasionally need to drag out your manual interfaces--either to correct mistakes or to work with one of the more obscure programs incompatible with Voice Xpress Standard . Don't worry if you find yourself missing the old double clicks and repetitive stress--after all, a little nostalgia never hurt anyone. --Rob Lightner
