As an accompaniment to and as promotion for the L.A. Noire game, Rockstar commissioned eight professional crime writers to each write a short crime noire style story. Each story is about 15-20 minutes of reading, giving you a total of around an hour or so worth or reading time.

Set in the 1940s, all of the stories feature things like dead bodies in alleyways, aspiring actresses, mobsters, cops with a conscience (or not), big cars, directors with big egos, and generally nothing ever having a happy ending - in other words exactly what you would expect from this genre. Most of the stories are reasonable without being great, but one or two are really rather good indeed. I think my personal favourite was probably Naked Angel.

On the Kindle presentation side though, this is one of the first professionally published books on the Kindle that looks like it has been published by someone who really understands what the Kindle can do. As well as the main cover picture, each of the eight stories is presented with its own cover picture and it even looks like these pictures have been chosen to work particularly well in black and white - the phrase "cover art" really is applicable in this case! The formatting is also perfect as I didn't see a single error in the entire book and there is an active table of contents too. I really am extremely impressed with this how well this is presented and other publishers should take note - this is how good a Kindle book can look!

Overall: 4 stars - One of the best game related promotions I have seen so far and one that gives me hope that some publishers really do understand that the Kindle can be much more than just a wall of text!

Some Great Tales 7 Jun 2011
By M. Dowden HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
To celebrate the game, 'L.A. Noire', this anthology of eight short stories has been released. With an introduction by Charles Ardai, a fully active table of contents, and featuring stories by the likes of Lawrence Block, Joyce Carol Oates, and Megan Abbott, along with others, this is a real treat. Apparently some of the tales are based around parts of the game's storyline, but as I haven't yet played it I cannot tell you which ones.

All the tales are more or less set in 40's L.A., and the stories range from such things as the sexual deviances of the rich and famous, to murder, including inside the mind of a killer; there is a good selection here. With literally murder by proxy, and committing a crime so someone goes down for it, there is more than enough to keep us all entertained.

If you love crime noir, then this should be ideal for you.

Some cracking stories 14 Jun 2011
By The Emperor TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Some of these stories were great and really did create a "noir" atmosphere without coming across as parody.

The authors are
Megan Abbot
Lawrence Block
Joe R. Lansdale
Joyce Carol Oates
Francine Prose
Jonathan Santlofer
Duane Swierczynski
Andrew Vachss

I was a bit disappointed with Lansdale's story which was a shame as I have read and liked some of his books.

The Joyce Carol Oates story was really enjoyable and reminded a little bit of James Ellroy.

I haven't played the game yet but this could stand alone as a short story collection. For a free product this was fantastic and certainly a lot better than the Novellas that are sometimes based on games.
