Whilst listening to most Johnny Thunders music, but particularly "L.A.M.F. - the lost '77 mixes" I put my mind through the whole gamut of words that best describe what I am hearing, and include "uncooked", "raw", "coarse", "gutsy", "forceful", "strong", "tidal" (as in unstoppable), "violent", "chaotic", "assertive" and "unvarnished". In this genre he is omnipotent, only matched by a few legendary bands such as The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, and his old band The New York Dolls. His music is true to the concept of rock'n'roll music and its derivatives that many of us signed up for - unspoilt by complicated arrangements and a plethora of fiddling around in the recording studio by a phalanx of sound engineers, producers, and managers.

On this album you will experience the very best of Johnny Thunders, who although he led a shambolic, substance abuse ravaged life, still was able to keep true to his musical preferences and not produce anything but sheer unadulterated punk rock music such as "Born To Lose", "Baby Talk", "Chinese Rocks", "Get Off The Phone", and "Goin' Steady".

Not a duff track on the album, and if you've not listened to Johnny Thunders before, please do now and see how many of the descriptive words above are bought to the forefront of your perception.

One of the essential five punk albums from two new York Dolls survivers in a crack band which added a real virtuoso guitar player in Walter Lure and a competent bassist (after Richard Hell left them having joined them from Television) in Billy Raith. Their greater experience, age and musical competence compared to their young punk rivals, creates a great swaggering confident sound and 14 great chant along songs. Simple, but great, rock and roll. Ramones if you will with extra chords and equally killer songs. Not one track of filler.

Jerry Nolan on drums is at a career best, playing incredibly powerfully with real swing and there is great dualling guitar work between Thunders and Lure. Many tried to cover New York Dolls songs during the punk era but few succeeded as many found Nolan's drum patterns too hard to replicate. Says it all.

You can either get the single or the double version, the latter has the same first disc as the single disc version but also has some additional demos, live tracks and remixes. The version on the second disc of "One Track Mind" is the defintive version to my mind and sounds more like the original single mix which did escape the poor mix of the first single "Chinese Rocks" and the original album. Don't worry if you have read reviews of this classic album and been put off by the oft repeated phrase "great songs but poor mix" as this was all rectified in the early 90s. The mixes are now excellent with the mud of the original vinyl 1977 release discovered to have been the result of a severe mastering fault at the final production stage. As always with Thunders, too little far too late. He tried to remix it himself in 1984 but these sound how they were originally laid down and mixed without the mud.

The New York Dolls were very important to the first wave of Punk bands in the U.S., and the U.K., but after an amazing debut, their scond was pretty poor. Till Thunders took the frontman roll and formed the Heartbreakers with former Doll Jerry Nolan and Punk poet Richard Hell, saddly Hell is not on this CD.
Thanks to Thunders conections with Malcom Mclaren, the Heartbreakers got a slot on the Anarchy in the UK tour. I guess to confirm them as Punk, but the sound on this CD is more of an amphetamine driven Rock "n" Roll, with the swagger of the Rolling Stones, which the Dolls also had, but much faster!
There is even a Ramones penned track Chinese Rocks which was a single at the time along with Born to Losse, which were favarites of Sid Vicious.
Every track on this album we hit you like a speeding train, Bang!after Bang! and is more "Punk" then any of the so called Punk acts of today. Most people will proberly not understand this, but the people who know what Punk means will love it!

The only studio album of Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers. The production is somewhat rough, but finally that also is a charm of this music. All songs are great. Especially I would like to mention „Pirate Love", „Can't Keep My Eyes On You", „Chinese Rocks", „It's Not Enough" and of course „Born To Lose". Highly recommendable is also the corresponding live album „Live At Max's Kansas City".

A must-have, classic! Heavy vinyl on a gatefold. There's a mistake on the back cover, it says "Get off the phone" on B side but it's actually at the end of the A side. Two extra songs on B side. Sounds awesome!
