Au cœur de la Brigade criminelle, le commissaire Adamsberg vaque à ses occupations. Même si Veyrenc, son ancien rival des Pyrénées, hésite encore à revenir, le reste de l’équipe évolue paisiblement : Rettancourt reste la grande « génératrice d’énergie », le chat dit « La Boule » dort toujours sur la photocopieuse, Danglard avec son verre de vin blanc développe un immense savoir, Mercadet est toujours à moitié endormi, Froissy fait des allers-retours entre sa réserve de nourriture et son bureau. Une petite dame âgée attend le commissaire sur le trottoir, elle vient de Normandie. Ils n’ont pas rendez-vous, mais il n’y a qu’à lui qu’elle veut parler. Une nuit, dans son village, sa fille a vu « l’Armée furieuse », c’est-à-dire une cohorte de morts vivants qui vient enlever les pires personnes des environs. Meurtriers, voleurs, tous ceux qui n’ont pas la conscience tranquille se sentent menacés. Cette vieille légende est le signe que de multiples assassinats vont se produire. Loin de sa circonscription, Adamsberg va pourtant accepter d’aller enquêter sur place, dans le village terrorisé de superstitions et de rumeurs sauvages. Aidé de la police locale, de son fils (qu’il a découvert dans Un lieu incertain), et de quelques complices, il tentera de protéger les mauvaises personnes contre le mauvais sort.

Format:Perfect Paperback
Classic Vargas policier, featuring the intuitive Commissaire Adamsberg, once more among a bunch of credulous nutters, this time in a Normandy village rather than his usual Paris beat. Who cares if the plot is bonkers, just enjoy the characters and the atmosphere.
My copy was rather poorly printed, with the tops of letters and accents almost invisible in places, and as I'm not a native French speaker, I could have done without that. I didn't open my copy until six months after I'd bought it or I'd have asked for it to be exchanged - I recommend you check your copy immediately.
