Probably the best English book on Kyudo,
By
This review is from: Kyudo: Essence and Practice of Japanese Archery (Hardcover)
Having said it is probably the best English language book on Kyudo, I should admit to never having read any other English language books on Kyudo (I've flipped through a few Japanese ones though, and it looks better than them). However, I am still pretty certain this will be up there with the best.I've been doing Kyudo for about 8 months now, and this book has already helped me enormously since the time I read it two weeks ago. My sensei speaks no English and my Japanese isn't too great, so I've now been able to learn the Japanese phrases for various stages of the Hassetsu (just learnt that word too :) ) and other useful words and that way get more out of my time with him. He can actually say some stuff to me now rather than just grabbing me arm/head/whatever and putting it in the right place. There are lots of photos and even more diagrams to help you go through the stages, and an excellent section on common problems. For example, I was shooting to the right every time, so I had to correct my Tennouchi (grip), and the problem seems to be gone. This is all thanks to the book. In addition, the book deals with how to look after your equipment, teaches about the history and background of Kyudo and has a short discussion section about what Kyudo really means, more than just hitting some target. In fact the whole book conveys the importance of Kyudo as a discipline of the mind as well as the body and the importance of style over hitting the target every time at the expense of the proper form. Trust me, get this book if you like Kyudo.

Should be known as the Kyudo Bible.,
By Arthur L. Kurtz (karthur30@hotmail.com) - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Kyudo: Essence and Practice of Japanese Archery (Hardcover)
This is one of the best books out on the art of Kyudo. I am currently in Japan teaching and have taken up the practice of Kyudo as a way to learn about Japanese culture. The book covers all areas of interest and is very detailed with step by step illustrations. My instructor refers to the book often to point out my mistakes and highlight my improvement. If you are learning Kyudo or just want to read about its history and cultural significance, then this book is for you. You will not be disappointed.

The definitive modern handbook to Kyudo,
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Kyudo: Essence and Practice of Japanese Archery (Hardcover)
As a practising martial artist and western style archer I find this book to be exceptional. Not only can one learn about the history and significance of this art, one can also learn advanced knowledge of the equipment, styles and techniques of kyudo in a very readable form. It has inspired me to take up this martial art and while I learn I find myself continually drawn back to reading it. This book is already a classic and I would strongly urge all martial artists, archers and anyone interested in zen philosophy to read it and read it. Dan & Jackie DeProspero have made some of the secrets of the East available to those of us in the West and I congratulate them for their excellent work which will certainly stand the test of time.

the invisible arrow,
By Marcos C. Heinzkill "insight reviews" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Kyudo: Essence and Practice of Japanese Archery (Hardcover)
This a great book not only to further understand the spirit of kyudo but to improve one's technique. The foreword is very interesting and will immediately take you to the essence of what kyudo really is. In the afterword, the levels of practice are explained in detailed which will help you understand how the path of kyudo can help you become a more peaceful person.
