Product Description

Product Description

KAGUYAHIME is one of Japans oldest fairy-tales the story of the moon princess who descends to Earth and is cared for by the family of an old bamboo cutter. Her luminous beauty is meant to spread peace and happiness, but instead the rivalry her heavenly presence provokes results in war.

Jiri Kylian one of Europes most highly-acclaimed choreographers, has created a highly-charged fusion of dance, music and theatrical images. The music, composed by Maki Ishii, fuses Western and Eastern sound elements, with Western percussion and Japanese drums, augmented by wind instruments closely associated with traditional Japanese court music. The visual impact of the piece is heightened by Michael Simons stunning design and lighting.

Nederlands Dans Theaters performances of Kaguyahime have received universal acclaim and it has been hailed as a visual, dance and musical masterpiece of rare quality, a creation that will leave no one unmoved.

If the intention of the choreographer Jiri Kylian was, as the accompanying booklet claims, to use the Japanese fairytale as a demonstration that men see women only as their property, then the ballet would be a failure. As it is, the moral is simply that it is dangerous for humans to come in contact with celestial powers and extraterrestials. The music of Maki Ishii is - well, Japanese; pianissimo and tender for the moon princess, lots of drumming for the fight scenes, similar to what we hear in Samurai movies, and flutes for the folkloristic parts. The choreography is unsurprising but energetically danced, and I enjoyed particularly the village scenes.
The real surprise is the outstanding, highly artistic work of stage designer Michael Simon. Especially his arrangements of lights and colors gives the ballet order, structure, and meaning. The camera angle is not just frontal but moves up and round to let you see the whole stage. A large screen and blu-ray quality is a must to appreciate the combined effect of dance and light, and the camera work.
This is not the Brothers Grimm, but if you are interested in Japanese culture you will enjoy the ballet.

This is the first Jiri Kylian ballet that I have a criticism. All other pieces that I have seen (and I have all DVD's of ths choreographer), I regard as works of genius. This one has too much time give nto the five male suitors and so little time given to dancing by the Moon Princess. The scenes do not hang together well as a result of trying to be over ambitious.

Kaguyahime 21 Mar. 2014

I was so impressed with the whole production - choreography, music, design and lighting etc. - and it was filmed 20 years ago!

All the dancers were brilliant especially Fiona Lummis.

I highly recommend the DVD to anyone who enjoys world class contemporary ballet.

Brian
