Grunt lasted 2 days, squeak lasted 6 days. Homer is still intact however my dog is now very frustrated as he expects it to still make noises when he mouths it!!

nice toy but didn't last that long before puppy got throught the stitching. Such a shame as i did like the look of it and the grunting noise.

I gave the toy to my dog on Christmas Day and she immediately fell in love with it. She carries it everywhere making it grunt and squeak. She is a gentle soft mouthed golden retriever so it is lasting well. She does occasionally get stuck in when it is not responding properly ie not squeaking when pressed and I have detected no damage to it. It's not flimsy and is quite substantial. It's well filled and seems to me like a good quality product. It is also a good size. It has been left out in the rain in error and dried well on the radiator. The squeak and grunt remained intact. I'm glad I purchased it for her because she loves it so much, but I would have had second thoughts if I had read the other review. I have had toys in the past that haven't lasted five minutes but this is going strong.
I would certainly try more toys from the same manufacturer.

Looked great, sounded great, but was disembowled by my Bedlington within a matter of minutes. Hoped for something a little robust from a dog toy

My dog (and cat) are crazy about Homer 21 May 2013
By Catrinka - Published on Amazon.com

My huge German Shepherd loves his toys...and the noisier the better, in his opinion. Because of his size, he can sometimes fit 2 or 3 smaller toys in his mouth at once and then follows me throughout the house, shoving them against my leg and squawking them all at the same time. Yeah, it's sort of cute when first you see it; but the cacophony of noise eventually wears you down.

This is where the large-size Homer is so much better. At 9.5" in length, the hedgehog's size insures that nothing else will fit in my big guy's mouth. Homer is a mouthful. I was looking forward to the groaning/honking noise since I find it a bit less wearing on the nerves than the high-pitched multiple squeaks of his other toys. However, our hedgehog only squeaks and rattles. It appears that we have a defective "groaner" in ours. Too late to return it, though...it was already full of slobber by the time I realized its problem. Still, he loves it.

Besides the noise, the only downside of this hedgehog is the same problem that I have with many other stuffed dog toys...they're easily ripped apart. My prey-crazy shepherd can be pretty rough on his belongings; so I usually thread a large needle with heavy-weight upholstery thread and go over the vulnerable areas of his stuffies before I give them to him. Doesn't make them last forever, but it does make a big difference in their durability. Fortunately, my pooch isn't an eater of toys or their stuffing, but he loves to find a hole and start pulling clouds of stuffing out. Homer's main vulnerability seems to be his legs which needed lots of extra stitching.

My shepherd isn't the only one loving this hedgehog, though. Our tiny adopted stray cat, Goose, will wrap her front legs around Homer and kick him with her back feet. Drives the dog crazy. Goose is only doing it, I think, because she adores the dog and wants him to spend time with her. In the meantime, the shepherd is gingerly reaching in to try to take back his hedgehog...and avoid the kicking kitty feet. At least there's no squeaking when the cat has claimed the hedgehog.

From the Killer of Hedgehogs 1 April 2012
By Aramat - Published on Amazon.com
We have developed some expert opinions on the variety of grunting hedgehogs available.

We started out with one where the grunter was made of a plastic bag rubber banded to a grunt maker. We know this, because the dog dismantled it in short order. Then, we decided to pay a little more for another non Kyjen brand, but it too was short lived. Finally, we went for the Kyjen. It has been almost a week and the grunter still works, as does the rattle, but the squeaker has been smooshed. This is a great improvement! The grunter in this toy seems to be a harder plastic contraption and therefore seems sturdier.

It's a little big for the 'tween dachshund, but it doesn't seem to bother her, so it doesn't bother me. Like all the plush toys we've purchased previously, she pulls the fur right out. A week into it, Homer is displaying male hedgehog pattern baldness.

So Far So Good 1 Sept. 2012
By J.N.Y. - Published on Amazon.com
I have a teething pitbull pup. I went to the store looking for something for her to play with, and she literally dragged one of these plushies from the display. That being said, she loves the texture of fur and will lick it until it gets wet and funky. She also rattles it around, scrunches its head, and it's the most durable toy she's had yet. I do anticipate on buying another one once she rips this one apart, but so far it's been holding up remarkably. She also holds it asleep and runs into her crate with it. Love this product!

Beware: Extremely Dangerous 10 April 2013
By Charlie's Mom - Published on Amazon.com

I ordered this toy for my puppy who is 18 months old and loves squeaky toys. I chose it because I was extremely pleased with 3 other toys made by the same manufacturer : Kyjen Squeakin' Eggs Plush Dog Toys, 3-Pack, Kyjen PP01056 Hide-A-Squirrel Pet Toy, Large Which I just ordered another as a gift for a friend and Kyjen Invincibles Plush Snake Dog Toy, 6 Squeakers, Green/Black. All fabulous!! My puppy is not an aggressive chewer so I thought the hedgehog would be a great addition. It had received a large number of very positive reviews. The Kyjen Homer the Hedgehog Plush Dog Toy - Large arrived less than an hour ago and I immediately opened the box and gave it to him. In five minutes, literally, he had ripped open the toy and had pulled out not only the stuffing- but the squeaker parts including 2 plastic discs - sized somewhere between a quarter and half dollar- that he could have easily choked on. The toy is in the garbage and my puppy is fine, but the outcome could have easily been much different.

Not as sturdy as other Kyjen toys 15 Jan. 2012
By Reads&Runs - Published on Amazon.com

We buy Kyjen toys almost exclusively because they last longer and are much better made than most other dog toys. We have a small dog and although he does like to chew on his toys, he is not a crazy chew machine, and Kyjen toys normally last at least three months before he is able to destuff them. We purchased Homer to replace another Kyjen hedgehog that we had purchased at PetCo (the previous one was two shades of gray, and not as brown as Homer, and also had no grunter). The other hedgehog lasted a super long time. Our dog ripped Homer open at a weak seam within 10 minutes, and pulled out the grunter and the rattle. We stitched him back together, and expect him to last a little longer, but we were VERY disappointed in the quality of this particular Kyjen product.

Maybe we just got a lemon, but we will be much more likely to purchase Kyjen toys in the store instead of on Amazon so that we can check the seams first.
