Useful if planning to do the Kungsleden,

This review is from: Kungsleden: The Royal Trail Through Arctic Sweden (Paperback)
This book is a very comprehensive guide to walking the Kungsleden, it is also, as far as I can tell, the only English guide to walking the Kungsleden. It contains detailed descriptions of each section of the 440km long Kunglseden and more usefully some descriptions of side walks to climb mountains you can do at each stop. It tells you how long each section is in distance time.I plan to walk the northern part of the Kungsleden at the end of June, so I haven't put it to test in the field yet, but I am writing this review now because the main reason I bought this book was for planning my trip rather than when I am actually there. And here is where it fell down slightly. The maps it gives for each section are black and white, very small and pretty hard to read. They are no substitute for proper maps and I have bought the necessary Lantmateriet Fjallkarten (Mounntain maps) to cover the areas I will be walking through. If all you plan to do is stick rigidly to the Kungsleden then the book may be sufficient alone, but I am planning to be a lot more ambitious and need the maps. My other downside is the lack of practical information. It doesn't provide contact details for hostels in the area - either websites or phone numbers and also more importantly there is no advice on the logistics of getting to and from the start of the trails. I managed to work out all of this for myself in the end from the internet and with help from local tourist offices and it turned out to be less of a problem than I expected, but I feel this information belongs in this book as well. On the plus side there are short sections advising on what to take, when to go etc. Its a nice little book which has whet my appetite for my upcoming trip and I am glad I bought it, so I would recommend it for any English speaker planning to walk on or around the Kungsleden, but don't expect it to answer all of your questions.
