Product Description

Product Description

Coiled like a snake at the base of the spine, kundalini is the spiritual force that lies dormant in every human being. Once awakened, often through meditation and yoga practices, it rises up the spine and finds expression in the form of spiritual knowledge, mystical vision, psychic powers, and ultimately, enlightenment.

This is the classic first-person account of Gopi Krishna, an ordinary Indian householder who, at the age of thirty-four, after years of unsupervised meditation, suddenly experienced the awakening of kundalini during his morning practice. The story of this transformative experience, and the author's struggle to find balance amid a variety of powerful physiological and psychic side effects, forms the core of the book. His detailed descriptions of his dramatic inner experiences and symptoms such as mood swings, eating disorders, and agonizing sensations of heat—and of how, with the help of his wife, he finally stabilized at a higher level of consciousness—make this one of the most valuable classics of spiritual awakening available.

This review is from: Kundalini: Evolutionary Energy in Man (Paperback)
This book is an excellent testament to the power of good research. Unwittingly, Gopi Krishna set something off that he didn't realise the consequences of and he lived a nighmarish existance for quite some time due to it. Most of this book is an excellent example for this, though I do feel it's a little extreme as this man was the exception rather than the rule. Most people who awaken the Kundalini do it over a period of time. This book is at best , an example of what can go wrong if you rush things like this. If you're a spiritual seeker i'd read this and Path Notes of an American Ninja Master before going into the more practical Kundalini books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent description, 20 Jun 2011
This review is from: Kundalini: Evolutionary Energy in Man (Paperback)

Gopi Krishna's book is an extremely well written and clear account of the effects of actually awakening the kundalini energy.

For all those people who think they are doing kundalini yoga or are really doing kundalini yoga with all its exercises and breathing routines, this is an essential description of what can happen if you 'do it right' - the effects of the exercises. It is also a warning to those who dabble in this area without understanding what can happen - if you do not understand the process and its effects. Some of the effects experienced by Gopi are dangerous and traumatic, they could have killed him or sent him insane.

His book does not tell you how he did it, because it is clear that Gopi Krishna was unaware to the very last what he had done that others hadn't to get this effect. He practised deep meditation and breathing exercises, but then so do and did thousands of others who have never had these experiences. So don't expect any instruction on techniques, but as a description of effects and a sort of cautionary warning it is marvellous.

The only thing that mars the book is the pompous, trite and clearly totally uninformed comments throughout the book that have been added as a 'psychological commentary' by James Hillman - who clearly has been no closer to a spiritual experience than a bottle of whisky. Miss his comments out and you have a brilliant book. Why Shambala felt the need to add them in I do not know, it detracts from the contents and is a real annoyance.

All that Gopi Krishna wrote is absolutely spot on.
