5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't want it to end, 19 Aug 2007
By AG (London, U.K.) - See all my reviews
I saw my eight year-old daughter scrunched over Kumari, totally immersed in her Gotham world of excitement and adventure. From a mystery land far away to modern day New York this story is thrilling and absorbing. At one point my daughter emerged from her bedroom actually jigging with excitement, "I know something going to happen, I know it, I know it" she bounced.

We have never been to New York, nor have we visited a mystery land over the mountains, yet this richly drawn story paints a very clear vivid believable landscape as Kumari searches for the answer to the mystery of who killed her mother. She is a young Goddess mysteriously transported to real-life Gotham, still learning the about useful magical powers that she has at her disposal. But then she finds out there are bad people out to get her. To top all that, she realises that if she remains in the human world - a world she really likes - for a year and a day she will become mortal. This ticking clock adds edge to the story and never allows it to become an indulgent travelogue.

Part mystery story, part comic romp this book binds it spell very effectively, and at the end of if my daughter stated, "I didn't want it to end". Well that's a good thing because Kumari Goddess of Gotham is the first of a trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good or better than the first one! , 25 May 2008

Amanda Lees did it again, we were really looking forward to the second one and have not been let down! We are having great fun reading about Kumari's adventures and thoroughly recommend this book. And now that it is being translated into other languages, I even get to read the trilogy in my native lingo!

5.0 out of 5 stars a forthcoming bestseller!
I can say as a professional reviewer and an university lecturer that "Kumari: Goddess of Gotham" told me more about the Western culture than any philosophical work. Read more
