Product Description

Product Description

This expanded edition of Thomas Nelson's trenchant study of a master of film includes new chapters on "Full Metal Jacket" and "Eyes Wide Shut". In the wake of the director's death, Nelson reconsiders his body of work as a whole. By placing Kubrick in a historical and theoretical context, this study is a reliable guide into - and out of - Stanley Kubrick's cinematic maze. Stanley Kubrick ranks among the most important American film makers of his generation, but his work is often misunderstood because it is widely diverse in subject matter and seems to lack thematic and tonal consistency. Thomas Nelson's perceptive and comprehensive study of Kubrick rescues him from the hostility of auteurist critics and discovers the roots of a Kubrickian aesthetic, which Nelson defines as the "aesthetics of contingency." After analysing how this aesthetic develops and manifests itself in the early works, Nelson devotes individual chapters to "Lolita", "Dr. Stangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey", "A Clockwork Orange", "Barry Lyndon", and "The Shining".

Though Thomas Allen Nelson's book on the films of Stanley Kubrick is not for everyone, fans of the famed auteur will have much to enjoy and think about while reading. Nelson is an obviously intelligent person with much to say, but I think maybe a little TOO much to say, his book is at times plodding, and only very perceptive Kubrickians will be able to understand his meaning. All the same, I enjoyed the book excellent well, and Thomas Allen Nelson's insights are fascinating. The important thing is, I had a deeper understanding of Kubrick's film afterwards.

This volume stands alone as a model of film criticism on the works of Stanley Kubrick. The book contains individual chapters on `Lolita' through `The Shining'. One of the things that I find so fascinating about this book is not only Nelson's ability to assess the individual films to such an analytical degree, but also to evaluate them as a progressive whole. It astounds me how much insight Nelson brings to Kubrick's films. Will there ever be an expanded version containing chapters on `Full Metal Jacket' and `Eyes Wide Shut'? One can only hope.

Nelson gives an exacting, deep, and fascinating look into the work of a cinematic genius. His interpretations of Kubrick's symbolism are fascinating and, nearly all of the time, are insightful and certainly plausible. A must for anyone who admires the work of this director.
