5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good SECONDARY bicycle lock. 9 Jun 2011
Verified Purchase
Just a quick one really. First of, I should just say that I would never use a cable lock as my primary bike lock. I would always recommend a D/U lock as the primary and a cable lock as the secondary for the purposes of locking the wheels and/or locking around an immovable object such as a lamp-post. Reason being cable locks are much, MUCH easier to cut through than are D/U locks. In truth, it doesn't matter how good the lock is, all locks are breakable with the right equipment. The only difference between locks is the amount of time they take to get through.

In reality, if you honestly care about your bike, 1 lock is never going to be sufficient. A D/U lock can not lock the frame AND both the front and back wheels, whereas a cable lock just isn't sufficient to lock up a bike frame on its own because no matter HOW good the cable lock, they are just too easy to cut through. It is simply a matter of pulling back the sheath and cutting through it with a pair of bolt cutters. Generally, this takes a matter of 30secs to 2mins at most.

Further more, if you are thinking of taking out bicycle insurance... most insurers won't even bother to consider you unless you have a lock which is a) a D/U lock and b) SoldSecure. In my experience, you will struggle to find a cable lock which is certified under the SoldSecure scheme.

All of this said, you really do get what you pay for in a lock. As a secondary lock, the Kryptonite Kryptoflex cable lock is an extremely good option. Again I would not even bother with any cable locks that are less than 10mm thick as they are too easy to cut through and anything less than a 1.5 meters in length is fairly useless in terms of locking up the frame AND the wheels. That said, the Kryptoflex 12mm by 1.

1.0 out of 5 stars cheap price quality to match 21 April 2011
bought this lock like most for its looks and price - BUT dont waste your money... The lock seemed ok for about a month then the key snapped inside the lock... can just about stil use it with half the key jammed in the lock . i kept the lock well oiled so it was definately a product fault.. Dont waste your money on this lock you can buy cheaper and better quality.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately doesn't do the basic 9 Nov 2010
I've had my bike stolen this past weekend while doing grocery shops. I've parked my bike in the supermarket's designed area for bikes and after 30 minutes came back to find my bike was stolen. The thief opened the lock as if he had the keys and even left the lock in the parking bar, intact.
Don't buy this lock because it's as good as not having one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Caught thief in the act 15 Sep 2013

I have never written a review before but think it necessary to warn people about this product. I left my bike outside Stephens Green shopping center yesterday (Saturday) and went for a walk around Dublin city. For those of you who are not familiar with Dublin, Stephens Green is a very busy area, especially on a Saturday. When I came back I found a thief on my bike about to take off. Once I confronted him he quickly gave me my bike back. Some passers by noticed the confrontation and approached me after the thief had left. One in particular said she had seen him "unlocking" the bike but that he didn't look suspicious. The position and break of the wire suggests he did not cut the lock but managed to apply enough force to snap it. He did this in a very busy area with what must have been minimal effort otherwise his behavior would have been noticed. I would suggest to anybody looking to buy a lock to seriously consider buying a U lock rather than this style of lock.

My bike was stolen while it was locked securely to a metal bicycle rack with this lock. Very disappointed. Not recommended for expensive bikes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Keys bend 31 Jan 2013
By Glaucon
Supplied with two keys which are ridiculously easy to bend - one key does not work any more and the other is on its way out. Very poor quality - very disappointed in what I thought was a decent brand. Can't even get a better key cut as they are much thinner than any of the blanks the key cutters hold.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kryptonite cable lock 16 Feb 2011
This cable lock is solid, compact and good quality. The good thing is it long - very practical. You easy can lock wheels and frame. My bike stays out side all the time. After about 3 months the lock got a bit rusty and was difficult to lock it. I used WD40 and it is like new again.

1.0 out of 5 stars disasterous choice 13 Jan 2011
Unfortunately I had the same bad luck. My bike also got stolen outside my house. Found the lock unlocked as if someone had the key to unlock it. Wouldn't recomend it to anyone as it is useless and uncapable of preventing bike stealing. Just to stress it, the lock was not cut or damaged or whatever... Just unlocked as if somebody had the key (which nobody had apart from me!)

2.0 out of 5 stars Lock
Wire is about 180cm. It is heavy - 0,74 kg. Reliably looking locks should be made precisely and this one is very roughly made. I wouldn't buy it again.
