4.0 out of 5 stars Good lock, but bear in mind ... 29 Oct 2009
This kyptonite lock is a very good lock. Whether or not it is the lock for your bike may well be another matter!

If you will not be carrying the lock around with you, I would very highly recommend it ... although that probably does rather defeat the main purpose of buying it in the first place!

This lock is not lightweight, so if you do not want to carry around more weight than you have to I would caution you against buying it. It's weight also means that if you were thinking of carrying this lock in your bag, rather than fixing it to your frame with the supplied mount, I would look for another lock.

Having mentioned the supplied mount, it is my chief complaint about this product! I suspect, the lock will not fit within the confines of any bike frame in a way that enables you to take it out of the "EZMount"(I have a spacious 21.5" frame and it doesn't fit because of it). The EZMount holds the lock a significant distance away from the frame of your bike so that even if the actual dimensions of the lock should fit within your frame, once you've added the EZMount it won't! This problem is, however, overcome by slightly offsetting the lock from the frame by fixing the EZMount pointing out at a slight angle over your chainset, and the fixing spline (which can be rotated around the shackle and fixed to ensure that it is held parallel to your frame), to ensure you don't knock it as you pedal. The other draw back with the mount (which admittedly may be peculiar to my specific lock or merely because it is comparatively new) is that whilst it may hold the lock firmly as you ride, it holds the lock so securely that it can be a bit of a fight to unmount it when you want to actually lock up your bike!

2.0 out of 5 stars Bracket from HELL 19 Feb 2009
The lock works fine. Unlike some of Kyrptonite's locks, you can fit the U-bar into the straight-bar either way round. I'd would caution against buying on looks though: it looks pretty in the photo, but in real life that orange bar is massive and very orange. I feel kind of embarrassed by it. It really is big, like a baby's arm or something. Understated it is not. Look at one in a shop first.

The real source of my buyer's remorse. The plastic is sturdy enough, but the design is just wrong. There is nothing EZ about mounting this bracket.

1) It holds the lock about 4 inches off the bike frame. Unless you have a *very* large frame, the lock won't fit in any place suggested in the instructions.

2) You can try getting creative and fitting it elsewhere, but the tightening-strap is either too short for, or doesn't tighten close enough for, any locations not shown in the instructions.

3) It *would* fit high up on the back forks, if they let you use the last notch on the tightening-strap. But, seemingly out of spite, this last notch is a different shape to all the others. Just as you get it tight enough to not swing into the spokes, it merrily slips past the notch and you have to take the whole thing off and reshape the last notch with a craft knife.

4) But the bracket won't come off. There is a whole section of the instructions for removing the bracket easily. But they are evil lies. You actually have to take the whole thing apart with an allen key.

5) Once you have it on the back forks you realise why you never see bike locks on the back forks - because your heel easily catches it when you pedal. So you have to take it apart with an allen key again, just to move it a few millimeters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product but check your frame size. 10 Dec 2010
This is a very solid and well made lock, and has the weight to prove it. It should deter all but the most determined and well equipped thief. The problem I have is that it is too big to fit within my frame. I have a Specialized Allez 52cm frame and there is no way that the lock fits in the triangle, never nind with the EZmount. The shorter version would probably fit, but wouldn't allow attachment to as many solid objects.
In terms of security, I would thoroughly recommend this lock, but if you want to fit it to your bike, check the frame size first.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Sub-£35 Shackle Out There. 29 Aug 2012
By IntensiveCareNurse TOP 100 REVIEWER
Verified Purchase
I spent far too much time researching reviews & opinions of shackle locks in order to find the best value (yes, Im a bit of a tight-wad), most reliable and most secure one out there, so am passing this on for others.
The Kryptonite range of shackles seems to win the coconut here, and the Kryptonite Evolution appears to come way ahead of others in a limited market place. Why?;

1) There are only 2 Sold Secure gold bicycle shackles for this kind of money (this one & the Masterlock Street Fortum). The Masterlock shackle, however, has very poor reviews re reliability & outright security.
2) This lock is exceptionally strong for the money (has a very impressive tonnage pull breaking point).
3) The lock action (key/tumblers) is exceptionally smooth, no reviews indicating any reliability problems (unlike much of the competition). The keys look & feel solid & well made. There is a light fitted to one of the 3 keys (a blue & funky beam too).
4) It simply looks the business (a strong looking lock is a deterrant in itself).
5) It is difficult to find realistic criticism for it amongst a great many reviews (on both Amazon UK & US, plus other sources).
5) The bike mounting system is the best I have seen, although some reviewers complain it won't fit their particular bike (I advise you size it to your bike first if the mount is important to you). It only fits on the front handlebar stem of my folding bicycle, for example, although Im happy to sacrifice street-cred over practicality. The adjustable fitting will go around MOST sizes & types of tube crossection (circular, or egg shaped... you name it), the only real restriction being the size of the space needed to mount the shackle there.
