Product Description

Product Description

Since time immemorial, yogis, sages and mystics have forsaken the pleasures of the ordinary world and have gone to secluded places to meditate, eager to attain even a momentary vision of Sri Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Once that same Krsna descended from the transcendental world to reveal on earth his eternal spiritual pastimes. The great sage Vyasadeva carefully recorded these in a book called the "Bhagavata Purana". "Krsna" is translated from that Purana by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

From the Publisher

"I request that you take advantage of this book, 'KRSNA', and enter into it's understanding. I also request that you make an appointment to meet your God now, through the self-liberating process of YOGA (UNION) and GIVE PEACE A CHANCE. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE (KRISHNA)"
- George Harrison (original publisher [Apple])

An introduction from Geroge Harrison, a story theme that can put the greatest Hollywood blockbusters to shame, and the promise of eternal bliss. What more can one want from a book?

Swami Prabhupada, who represents an ancient line of spiritual teachers from India has translated in simple English the life and times of Krishna, regarded by millions worldwide as an incarnation of God who appeared 5000 years ago in a remote village called Vrindavana in India. The source for his summary of Krishna's life is the tenth book of an ancient Indian holy scripture called the Srimad Bhagavatam.

Swami Prabhupada's work is probably one of the finest studies on the life of Krishna in the English language. I was personally overwhelmed by the depth of the philosophy and the simplicity of his writing.

Definitely worth a place on your book shelf..... after you finish reading it of course.

Just who was Krishna 13 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Krsna
Who was or is Krsna or Krishna which is a word that was only known to Hindu scholars of fifty years ago, this was because of the initial speaking of the Bhagavad Gita on the Battle Field of Kurukshetra by Krsna estimated at around four thousand years ago in North India. Now the word Krishna along with words "Hare Krishna" are in common usage due to being popularised by ISKCON movement.
Krsna was a prince who had his kingdom stolen from him by his uncle Kamsa who had imprisoned his parents. By divine intervention when born Krsna was sprung from jail then brought up in a forest village of Vrindavan amongst a cattle farming community.
Here he initially has to overcome many forms of demons in fights before eventually regaining his kingdom. There are parallels with other myths in this like Moses or King Arthur being raised away from his parents as with some of the Ancient Greek heroes. Was this is an early version of this theme then it could be an early version of this myth.
What is a myth but the telling of an old story which is beyond the comprehension of every day life leading to inspiration to the local population?
Though written with a view of conversion to the Hare Krishna faith I try to give a personal unbiased view of this book that has a poetic tone of language and while covering an old eastern myth it is accompanied by lavish illustrations done by devotee members of ISKCON.
This book isn't an interpretation of the Vaisnava {Devotees of Vishnu} view but the myth as it was retold for generations from the Vedic days of 4,000 years ago. And regained popularity via Chaitanya {1486-1534} and was part of a revolt against Moslem domination of Hindu culture, Buddhism having been driven from India a few centuries previously.
On the west of India this trend against domination from Islam was again obvious from Guru Nanak who was a contempory of Chaitanya. Eventually this settled down and then British influence began just after this time when things changed again.
There is a trend to belittle the Hare Krishna movement and call it a cult but first we should ask ourselves was early Christianity seen as a cult by pagan Rome. All in all this is a good read written by a man dedicated to his cause as he introduced to the west the deeper ideas of Indian culture

great for all ages 17 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback
The narrative of this book is enchanting! it takes us on a journey through ancient India and is also of interest from a anthropological perspective if you so wish to see it that way. The lucidity of the writings always amaze me. I also read the book to children in place of a bed time story thus enhancing thier cultural knowledge and capacity for imagination. It is beautifully written.
