Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The video game industry has always drawn upon works of fiction for inspiration--sooner or later, the process had to reverse itself. Krondor: the Betrayal began its life as the bestselling role-playing video game of all time, written by Raymond E. Feist for Dynamix Inc. Feist, whose Serpentwar Saga has sold millions of copies and established him as one of the most popular fantasy authors of modern times, also wrote this novelisation which places the action of the game in the context of his fully realised fantasy setting, Midkemia. Feist's fans are legion. Long-time readers will be delighted at the return of popular characters Pug the Wizard, Squire Locklear and others, as they face the menace of a marauding elf war-chieftain and a mysterious cabal of wizards. But first-time Feist readers may find Krondor the Betrayal baffling and tiresome--without the momentum of the larger series, much of the story's effect is diminished. The video game influence in this book is unmistakable, as evidenced by an encumbrance of sword fights, multilevel conspiracy and two-dimensional characters. --Brendan J. A real disappointment 20 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Until I bought Krondor the Betrayal I had collected all Feist books and loved every one of them. Betrayal at Krondor has stopped me from buying the new ones! A few years ago I had a PC game called Betrayal at Krondor; the scenario was great and it actually introduced me to Feist. In the book it looks like the author has run out of ideas and was forced to write a book out of the game scenario. Revisiting an old idea is not always a bad thing to do, but in this case it left me with the impression Feist has hired some unknown author to ruin his own scenario : the book is so badly written you can actually figure out it is based on an older work! Perhaps I am being a bit unfair, as I have read far worse novels, but still this can't be compared to the rest of Feist's work.

THE STORY:
A decade after 'A Darkness At Sethanon', dark power is once again stirring the Dark Elves up to war against the Kingdom. Cast out by his people, the dark elf Gorath and the failed magician Owen attempt to warn the Kingdom and battle the threat.

WHAT'S GOOD:
Gorath's character allows us a bit of previously unseen exposition of the nature of the dark elves. Usually they're just portrayed as simply evil, but Gorath shows that there are grey areas among the elves.

WHAT'S BAD:
Everything except for Gorath. Game tie-ins tend to be pants anyway, but direct conversion of the plot of a game onto paper simply doesn't work. It's appalling how transparent the game basis is as Owen battles a group of enemies, defeats a 'boss' character, receives a clue and a magic item and then heads on to a new environment. In the new environment he battles a group of enemies, defeats another boss, gets a clue and so on and so forth. Jimmy and Locklear's inclusions in the book are also botched as the roles they play in the story are identical and Feist basically writes them as the same character. How could the man who brought us 'Magician' have fallen so far?

I have played the game that this book was based on and enjoyed it greatly. However the plot that was suficient to fuel a game is not as engaging on paper and characters that were good by game standards are not fleshed out much in this book. If you have read other Fiest books and know these characters already, then you will get much more from this book than if this is your first experience of Fiest. Read "Magician" by Fiest befor reading this one. However for Fiest addicts it is still a good buy, it's nice to hear more from our favourite characters from the previious books.

I really enjoyed this book. Having been recommended by my brother to read The Riftwar Saga starting with Magician. it was, for me, a natural progression to read this book. Read more

Very poor!
I thought the whole 'Krondor' set of book's were poor at best and it seemed crazy to spoil the Midkemia serie's with them. Read more
