Book Description

Kris Longknife is back in the good graces of the brass—and to demonstrate that, they've promoted her to Admiral.  Now her mission is to find the home base of the space pirates who are plaguing the fringes of the galaxy.
But no mission is ever simple when your name is Longknife. And this time the complications range from the military to the personal, as Kris finds herself—reluctantly—having to make some command decisions about her future...

4.0 out of 5 stars Breath Easier Humanity. Kris gets a battle fleet 3 Nov. 2013
By Ghostgrey51 TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
    Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Long-time readers of this series knew when reading Furious (Kris Longknife Novels) you wouldn't be able to keep Kris down. So here we are picking up where that book left off, Kris finally meeting the bird people, The Alwans, and her Great-Grandmother Rita and of course there's unfinished business with the mysterious and blood-thirsty race first encountered in Daring (Kris Longknife Novels).
There's action at the beginning then the bulk of the book is taken up with; firstly assimilation between the US and Rita's colonists and Alwans; King Ray turns up to add some fireworks and ships for Kris; secondly the mechanics and management of putting a bunch of ships together into a fleet; thirdly "Kris and Jack" writ large .And then another battle with the aliens this time a well scripted fleet action. Of course things are left open ended.
On the face of it that might not sound a strong premise but this series has its own solid following, folks by now are in for the long haul as each book is a chapter in Kris' life, so Shepherd can afford at times to take the foot of the pedal and indulge in a bit of depth; details such as how you put a fleet together, get it into shape and sort out personnel issues. It's this all made interesting reading and sets up interesting possibilities for future books.
Not much of Abby in this one, Nellie's AI is way beyond the `A', Penny gets some rewards for being hauled about the galaxy by a Longknife and Jack gets a few pages to himself.
Another good addition and with enough `bits' of family history to make you want to good back to Shepherd's time as Mike Moscoe and the Jump Universe series.
Aside from the next Longknife book; on the horizon are books featuring Vicky Peterwald and Trouble/Ray in their younger days- can't wait.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love and War 25 Dec. 2013
By Paul Tapner TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
    Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Eleventh novel in the Kris Longknife series of military science fiction novels. This series does by now have so much backstory that this wouldn't really work as a jumping on point. New readers should go to Mutineer (Kris Longknife Novels).

Regular readers of the series, read on.

This volume runs for three hundred and seventy four pages, and is divided into fifty four chapters.

It does contain a fair few more moments of an adult nature than the series has ever had before. But there's nothing too explicit and nothing in the way of strong language.

We pick up right after the end of the last book, with Kris having found a planet out on the frontier with a colony started by long lost humans, who are living side by side with an alien race.

She has a lot to take care of. To get this world ready for the impending attack from the mysterious aliens whom she was hunting. And to make some decisions about her future also.

This one does hit the ground running, and is supremely readable right from the start and throughout. There's hardly any spaceship combat. The bulk of the story is dealing with all the situations that the planet offers, and with the Kris and Jack relationship. The latter does get a great deal of attention. Some may find all the romance a bit too much, but it does allow for us to see facets of the two characters we've never seen before, and for some good development for them.

It is to the great credit of the writer that they allow developments to keep moving forward and the characters to grow and change because of that. When certain things happening to fictional characters make you smile, you know you care for them.

Kris Longknife has taken it upon herself, and the rest of humanity, to protect a planet and its indigenous sentients from the mysterious maurading world killer fleet. Then at the end of Furious, she discovered it wasn’t just indigenous natives she was protecting. That discovery has made waves back in human space, and Kris finds herself promoted, and placed in charge of the planetary defence. But she can’t quite figure out if the promotion is meant to give her the power she needs, or just the power to fail convincingly…

The plot progresses in several interesting directions, as Kris meets aliens, fights other aliens, tries to find out more about aliens, and has to cope with aspects of her personal life. The bird-aliens are interesting: I want to see a lot more of them. There are hints at great diversity between different groups, but not enough actual observation to back this up. Here’s waiting for the next morsel!

4.0 out of 5 stars Consistently enjoyable series 10 Jan. 2014
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is quite a long series (11 books and a few novellas), and if you have got this far you will probably be keen to continue. If you are new to the series, they would be much better to read in order, although it is not essential to include the novellas.

Each book contains some character development, and this one is no exception. There is enough of the familiar about each book that you know you are reading a series, but it is not essentially the same plot line again and again in the way that some space operas become. There are some enjoyable humorous asides dotted here and there as well.

I plan to keep reading if any more come out. Give the series a try (starting with Kris Longknife Mutineer) and see what you think.
