Jake Lawton isn't your average ex-soldier. After returning from Iraq in the previous novel Skarlet, he found himself slap bang in the middle of a vampire problem. Being the one person to stnad up and 'do the right thing' meant that he put himself in danger and became a bit of a one man vampire slaying army. So no surprise that Krimson follows on much in the same vein. Jake has his accomplice Aaliyah and a couple of friends stashed away to provide him with tip offs as to what the vamps next step is and he intends to be there to stop them. The vampire Gods and their human supporters are intent on turning Britain into a nation of vampires and food, and they aren't all that keen on Jake messing up their plans again.
Emson writes following the James Patterson school of writing - keep your chapters short and snappy, sometimes barely two pages long. This works well as nearly every chapter becomes its own little cliffhanger and you keep reading. If you haven't read Skarlet then most of the supporting characters will have little meaning for you and Emson expects you to keep up, any backstory is kept to a minimum as the tale races to its bloody conclusion. There are some nice touches - such as panicked bystanders referring to the non-Twilight style of vampires but this book is all about the action. In fact it is more vampire action novel than horror or fantasy. Fist fights, punch ups, a nasty case of staking the enemy and some heavy duty guns are the weapons of choice for this group of vampire slayers. If you've had enough of vampires being sparkly or sexy then this will bring them back on track. These vampires are killers and theres only one man who is ready to fight them.
