Book Description

18 Nov 2010
When they were creating and releasing their most influential albums in the mid to late 1970s, Kraftwerk were far from the musical mainstream - and yet it is impossible now to imagine the history of popular music without them. Today, Kraftwerk are considered to be an essential part of pop's DNA, alongside artists like the Beatles, the Velvet Underground, and Little Richard. Kraftwerk's immediate influence might have been on a generation of synth-based bands (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, the Human League, Depeche Mode, Yello, et al), but their influence on the emerging dance culture in urban America has proved longer lasting and more decisive. This collection of original essays looks at Kraftwerk - their legacy and influence - from a variety of angles, and demonstrates persuasively and coherently that however you choose to define their art, it's impossible to underestimate the ways in which it predicted and shaped the future.

Review

'For the Kraftwerk trainspotter… nearly every chapter yields nuggets of insight and historical value.' --The Wire, Feb 2011

'It is refreshing to encounter Kraftwerk: Music Non-Stop, a new collection of academic essays on the band, which spurns fashion and firmly returns the emphasis to ideas. Editors Sean Albiez and David Pattie have assembled a compendium of rigorously argued and illuminating discussions of the band, one that more than compensates for the shallower latter-day ramifications of what Alex Seago termed in 2004 the ''Kraftwerk-Effekt''.' --The Oxonian Review, 2nd May 2011

3.0 out of 5 stars Overly academic but fans will like it 17 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A series of essays about Kraftwerk from a mainly cultural and sociological perspective with a few diversions. Tries a bit too hard to prove its academic chops with over florid language and seems a little undergraduate at times - why use everyday or ordinary when you can use quotidian.

Probably for the die-hard fan only. I'm one!

2.0 out of 5 stars Parked by the side of the autobahn 26 Jun 2012
By Jogger - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Having loved Kraftwerk since my teens, and treated Wolfgang Flur's autobiography as something approaching a bible, I leaped on this book with utter delight - then found myself reluctant to even carry on reading it. The Kraftwerk story is not one of rock's most exciting, being largely a succession of eccentric decisions followed by increasingly frustrating periods of silence. But Flur brought color and excitement to the tale and other writers have likewise found much to marvel at. Whereas this one.... Back to Wolfgang, I think.
