Kowa BD32 Series Roof Prism Binoculars

Kowa Japan proudly present their heritage BD32 Series binoculars. Produced in Japan, Kowa infuse over half a century of heritage in optics design and manufacture into this widely acclaimed series. Boasting top end features such as C3 optical coatings, lightweight balance and 100% waterproofing, the BD32 Series are capable of delivering top level performance and providing a quality optical experience for the most discerning user.

C3 Optics

Kowa uses top quality Japanese fully multi-coated eco-glass to produce their BD lenses and prisms. As a result of such focus and attention on the quality of the internal optics, the BD Series boast top end light transmission, optimal contrast and colour definition, resulting in lifelike viewing subjects.

The BD32 Series use the more compact Schmidt-Pechan prism system, which has a key benefit of keeping the binoculars light weight. However, one common issue found in the Schmidt-Pechan design is a loss of reflectivity. In order to counter, Kowa engineers created their C3 Ultra Reflective prism coating. This specialist dielectric coating is extremely reflective and produces a 99% reflectivity rate across the visible light spectrum, a vast improvement on the 85% rate produced by more traditional metallic lens coatings such as silver or aluminium. With such a high reflectivity rate, the C3 coating reduces the amount of light lost in transmission producing brighter, clearer and more vivid images.

Another issue faced in all types of optical construction is polarization of light during transmission, causing a loss in image contrast and resolution. To ameliorate, Kowa engineers apply phase correction coatings to the roof prism surfaces which greatly improve image quality.

Designed with function

Functionality and usability are the key principles behind the extensive design features incorporated into the BD32 Series. A large and textured focus wheel sits in the centre of the binoculars which has been designed to be ultra fast and responsive. In just 1.5 revolutions of the centre wheel, a user can quickly refocus from near to far so they never miss the moment. Weighing just 565g and measuring 12.2cm (L) x 12.7cm (W) x 5cm (H), the BD32 Series exemplify the mid-size binocular. Not too light so as to be susceptible to the perils of optical shake but at the same time small enough to slip into a bag or even pocket.

The body is ergonomically shaped and incorporates specially positioned grooves allowing users to maintain a good grip in all conditions. Located on the eyepieces, click stop and slide up eyecups allow a user to adjust the distance between their pupil and eyepiece, they can also accommodate spectacle wearers providing them with a complete field of view. The optics have been configured to allow a close focus distance of just 1.5m, a useful feature rarely found on binoculars in this size class. Finally, there is a centrally positioned tripod socket which allow the binoculars (with use of an L mount adapter) to be attached to a tripod.

Built for the great outdoors

The BD32 Series have been designed to be fully optimised for use in any climate, no matter how extreme. Firstly, all body joints and cavities have been fully sealed to make the binoculars 100% waterproof. Each pair is thoroughly water tested after production to ensure that they hold up to their 100% waterproof claim - if a pair fails any of these stringent tests then it does not leave the factory! Each binocular barrel has been injected and sealed with nitrogen gas in order to counter any internal fogging of the optics, a commonly found problem when the binoculars are subjected to rapid temperature change.

The BD32 binoculars are wrapped in a thick polymer exoskeleton which acts as a form of armour, designed to appropriately protect the internal optics from casual knocks and scrapes. The body armour also serves a dual purpose by providing a user with a firm surface to grip even when wet. Finally, the binoculars come in a dark green colour, the particular shade of which has been specially chosen by Kowa in order to help camouflage them when in the great outdoors.

Could be used for.....

Incorporating so many complimentary features, the Kowa BD32 Series binoculars have a diverse number of applications. Top end image reproduction makes the binoculars perfectly suited to the discerning user who puts a large emphasis on quality and optical performance.

Thanks to the various outdoor design features, such as 100% waterproofing and rubber armouring, the binoculars are perfectly suited to use in extreme or very wet outdoor conditions. Excellent bins. Light weight, light clear image. Took them bird and gorilla watching in East Africa and was not disappointed. The four lens caps are fiddly.

Kowa BD 32-10 field review... 18 April 2012
By Idaho John - Published on Amazon.com
Style Name: 10x32
I recieved a pair of Kowa BD 32-10 binoculars a week ago and have had them in the field every day and wanted to give an initial review.

My motivation for getting a 10 power was to be able to identify local hawks and falcons with a bit more ease. Moving closer to the bird to take advantage of my 8 power did not work. Often the bird would fly off before I could get close enough to see the detail that I would like to.

Weight and size - the BD is right at 19 ounces...I like the weight. This size - 5 inches by 5 inches by 2 inches - is about right for me, I do not struggle with fit and while the binocular is small it is viable tool for observation.

Outer covering - I really like the green and black rubber armoring, it has indentations and a non slip texture that promotes ease of use.

Eye relief - more important than weight and size as I wear prescription lenses. The Kowa features usable eye relief of 15 mm. There is an eye cup adjustment that features 4 settings and it is solid - a definite click at each stop. This is a great option if you do not wear glasses.

Field of view is 315 feet/1000 yards - which is too narrow. In practical terms, I could not follow birds in flight up close as easy as I could with a smaller power binocular. But to get more field of view in a quality 10x32, you may have to spend more.

In the field. I was able to identify "that large raptor," as an Osprey and see the variations in red tail hawks. The Kowa got me close enough to identify a female Kestrel and watch as she enjoyed a small mouse for breakfast. And I was able to identify a black throated sparrow - not an uncommon visitor but not a regular.

Optic performance - is adequate, with a very slight change in clarity at the edge of the view, a wide sweet spot, and on occasion certain edges will have either a very faint yellow or blue fringe but this is not consistent. The view is clear and the resolution adequate. The Kowa has Schmidt/Pechan roof prisms, fully multicoated lens that provides a bright view. It is a step - albeit a very small one - below the current XD/HD optic glass on the market. Objective size - 32mm versus 42mm - the difference is not noticeable to me until about 10 minutes before night fall. At that point, the 8x42 bypassed the Kowa in performance in terms of light gathering. The diopter adjustment works well but it is does not lock to prevent change in setting during use and for the price, this is a significant over sight on Kowa's part as binoculars with comparable prices have this feature.

If you are looking for a rugged, small binocular for either hunting or specialized to watch birds at distance - raptors, waterfowl or birds in difficult but open terrain, these Kowas are an great tool for that purpose. If you are looking for an multi purpose binocular, I would opt for an 8x42 or an 8x32 in one of the mid price range optics that features HD/XD glass, fully multicoated lens and light weight design.

This little binocular earns a strong 4 star rating. A wider field of view and a locking diopter would have resulted in an enthusiastic 5 stars.

Recommended for hunters and the dedicated raptor/distance birder who does not want to pack a spotting scope.
Kowa BD 10x32mm Binoculars short review 24 Feb 2012

Image resolution and color excellent. The image is very contrast and very bright for a 32mm diameter.
minimum focus of 1.5m is very good, enables me to see insects and not only birds.
I have some minor things that I don't like:
focus ring is to slow
direction of focus opposite from what I am used in my other binoculars
6 degree angle is OK but I prefer 7 or even 8
at the price they are sold I think it's a very good purchase
