The Original Stereophone

For some, music is a nice distraction. A thing to tap your toes to. For us, music isn’t a thing; it’s a place we go. We are the true believers.

Koss has been bringing people closer to the music they love for more than 50 years. The first Stereophone (SP/3) in the world was created by John C. Koss and Martin Lange in 1958 and since then, Koss’ innovative products have gone from strength to strength with a range now including Full Size Stereophones, On-Ear Stereophones, In-Ear Stereophones, Ear-Clip Stereophones, Wireless Stereophones and Communication Headsets. Now, more than 50 years later….Koss’ creation has become a $2 billion industry, worldwide.

Three principles serve as the foundation for the company’s success: The sound of Koss; focus on fit and breakthrough customer service. What do these principles mean?

The sound of Koss: Musician, John C. Koss created “the sound of Koss” in 1958 and we have stayed true to it to this every day. The sound of Koss brings music back to life. Koss engineers are rigorous in their pursuit of the absolute best sound but it is the human listening experience that sets Koss apart.

Focus on fit: We are obsessed with creating the absolute perfect fit – without it; we can’t get the perfect sound. We strive to create products that offer custom settings for every music lover. Our products couple to the ear – it’s just you and your music.

Breakthrough customer service: Koss was the first to offer Limited Lifetime Warranty in 1989. Our domestic customer support staff is ready to help any listener with any issue. The Koss US factory and warehouse is based in Milwaukee Wisconsin – logistically, Koss has created an onsite inventory system that makes “out-of-stocks” virtually impossible. With all this in mind, what specifically do the Koss Porta Pro On-Ear Headphones have to offer you?

The History of Koss Porta Pro On-Ear Headphones

Koss Porta Pro On-Ear Headphones’ high quality sound set performance and comfort standards for portable personal listening worldwide first introduced in 1984. Since then, to the delight of devout Porta Pro enthusiasts, Koss has preserved the original design and performance that made the Porta Pro a portable music icon.

Designed for those with refined musical taste, the lightweight Koss Porta Pro headphones continue to be the most requested headphone Koss headphone. Constructed from Mylar, the elements are extremely rigid, minimising mechanical distortion and ensuring exceedingly accurate sound reproduction.

What do Koss Porta On-Ear Headphones have to offer?

The Porta Pro’s offer extreme comfort with the fantastic temporal pads which provide you with an ultra-secure fit; making them ideal for running, walking and those daily visits to the gym. To add to that, the fantastic oxygen-free copper voice coils improve signal transmission for a clean, crisp sound, so you can listen to your music in its full glory.

Porta Pros are super light making them feel practically weightless, even after hours of high fidelity listening and the straight, dual entry 4 foot cord allows you extensive freedom of movement to ensure that you can position the headphones for optimum listening. When not in use, simply collapse them down into a compact protective package and tuck them into your briefcase, gym bag or the included carrying case and carry them with you wherever you go.

This is all backed up by the Koss Stereophones Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Koss Porta Pros feature dynamic elements that deliver exceptionally rich, deep bass and remarkably wide frequency response to capture every nuance in your favourite movie or musical performance.

Since everyone else has concentrated on the virtues of these excellent headphones, I thought it might be useful for people (who have researched) to offer the following subjective insights about the Koss Porta Pro and their main rival, the Sennheiser PX100 (which is also available from amazon at a similar price point).

I own both sets, so I would like to issue the following comments about their relative sound quality.

PX100 - These offer a very beautiful, well rounded sound. Not bass heavy, but very coherent, and thoroughly enjoyable as a listening experience. They tend to improve with 'run in', and sound terrific overall.

PortaPro - These offer better bass reproduction, but also sparkling mids and highs. They seem to produce a far richer sound overall, especially when comparing the same songs encoded in the same format (WAV) on a Cowon D2 personal media player.

In short, both these sets are excellent, but if the sole criterion is sound quality, my preference is just slightly for the Koss PortaPros. I have previously owned a pair of audiophile Sennheiser HD 595 headphones, and strongly feel that the sound quality of the Koss Porta Pro, in particular, is quite comparable.

I hope this review is useful to people who are on the fence, especially as no one else seems to have covered this comparison in their reviews.

Finally, I have found headphones that sound great and feel comfortable. I've bought many different headphones over the past two years, trying to find a pair that don't feel uncomfortable after 30 minutes of continuous listening. Below are two recently purchased headphones I own:

Sennheiser PX200: They didn't give their full potential because they sit too light on my ear. They do sound great if you push them close to your ear though.

Sony MDR-V300: Sound good with lots of bass, but sometimes I feel like I'm listening to music through a wall and they feel uncomfortable after a 30 mins. For the cheap price they're good.

The Koss Porta Pro Stereophones are mind blowing. I really can't express enough in words how good these are and they sound even better now I've run them in. The sound is outstanding with superb clarity and bass. I personally don't think the bass is over done at all, it sounds well balanced. I mainly listen to Progressive, Uplifting, Melodic Trance, for example: Puma White - Copenhagen (Original mix) & Mike Foyle vs. Signalrunners - Love Theme Dusk. These headphones sound great with other genres too and really bring the music alive. The Porta Pro's sound magnificent when used with a computer installed with a decent sound card, but they also sound great with MP3 players. I use these with my Creative Zen Touch and they are far better than the supplied in-ear headphones.

These headphones look very retro cool and in my opinion they are very cool indeed. They are the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn (I've had them on for 3 hours and I'm feeling no ear discomfort at all) and I guess thats why the design has never changed since 1984. They look quite fragile at first but they are actually pretty sturdy.

After an unfortunate incident involving my (slightly hated) Sony headphones and a surprisingly high amount of vomit, the time came last week end to order some new headphones. I don't believe in buying anything without researching carefully, so after reading many reviews on all sorts of headphones, ranging from the good, the bad and the ugly, I concluded that my hard earned money (well I'm a student, but baby sitting is still work) should be well invested in a set of Koss PortaPros.

One week after ownership, and I can't think of a better way to spent my money.

Build and appearance: 7.5/10
In terms of build and design, I found the headphones much more impressive in the metal (and plastic) than I had been expecting. Quality is something I am pretty anal about, but these are pretty bang on the money. The finish is not luxurious, but feels like it will last if treated nicely. The metal is nice, and again aids the feel of durability. I had better explain - these are not by any means going to rival a JCB in terms of ruggedness. The phones are slim in design, and extremely light. However, they feel as though they will happily last a lifetime of normal, relatively careful use, while in the event of trouble you have the included Lifetime Warranty to fall onto.

The design, which I was not keen on in the pictures on the internet, looks much better on person. The headphones remain on the 'ugly' end of the scale, but in an almost endearing way. They are very unique, much due to their 80's heritage. The metal is tastefully applied, and allows for an attractive contrast against the black plastic while installing a quality look, meanwhile the blue accents (which I hated on photos) add a little uniqueness to the design, and helps make them stand out.

Small, flimsy and seemingly fragile. You would be forgiven for thinking that you had wasted your cash on these, that is not the case at all. These phones punch way above their weight adapting to most music styles with ease, the bass response is surprisingly full, and even better after the 'burn in' period (I left mine playing in another room for the whole duration of Christmas day!), I listen to mainly electronic and Bass-heavy music. If you're thinking of a small, folding, Sennheiser-ish equivalent - DON'T! Get these, and they even come with a lifetime warranty from Koss.

If I had any criticisms, they would be:-
- Not too strong with the treble/higher frequencies - but then I don't believe the design has changed much since the 80's when tape didn't have such a high frequency range.
- If adjusting the headband after placing these on your head, you can get your hair caught which hurts a bit.

Update 08/01/2012

After reading other reviews I became paranoid that I may have a fake pair. After researching some 'how to spot the difference' guides online I became a little more worried - Whilst at the same time thinking "if mine are fake, and sound this good then how amazing would real ones sound".

Beware of this guide as one point in particular is incorrect. Most guides will tell you that if you don't have a small number 1 moulded (e.g. if you have any other number like 4) in the plastic on the inside of the ear strut then your headphones are fake. The rest of the points in this guide are correct. But it also pays to bear in mind that the reviewer comparing the real and fake would probably have only 1 pair of each, so would make generalisations.
